new neighbors giving christmas/holiday gifts

we recently closed in the fall, and we have already received 2 gifts from our new neighbors. we did not expect anything, and we are still doing a lot of work in the house so we don't even have everything set up to (1) host or (2) bake.

we dropped off a thank you card to the neighbors that left a gift for us on Christmas. but just today a second neighbor rang the bell and hand-delivered a gift.

what is the etiquette? just thank you cards for now?

it's pretty evident we are doing work on the house, so it's not like we have $$ to spend

that was nice of them. i think a thank you card is fine. but maybe once you get settled in and are done with the renovations maybe stop by with a bottle of wine or some baked goods and chat with them

I don't think anyone would expect a return gift. It's simply to welcome you to the block I am sure.

I'd probably get a bottle of wine if I couldn't bake anything in return, you can get decent bottles for $15 or so.

A card and that's it. These are people welcoming you to the neighborhood. If I had s new neighbor I would do the same and expect NOTHING in return. Remember, they all know whats its like to move...

A card saying thank you is MORE than enough.

I guess for me it would depend if they were welcome gifts, of christmas gifts... the subject line said christmas. if it was a welcome gift, then i agree - a TY card is definitely enough.

I would say just a thank you card is sufficient. Our neighbors moved in the end of last month and we just never got around to introducing ourselves, so last week we stopped by with cookies I baked just to say hello and they were very appreciative. I didn't expect anything in return.
