Tipping Sanitation men/ Mailman, Cleaning lady

My dad was a mailman and almost 90% of his route tipped. I usually give $25. Since my mail person is new ill do a $10 Dunkin donuts gift card. My garbage men I never see but would tip them if I did.

I tip our mailman $20 and our UPS guy gets $25 - he walks everything up to our apartment (we live in a 3 floor walk up).

I don't have a cleaning lady but if I did I would give her an extra week's pay - that is what all my friends who do have them give.

Re: Tipping Sanitation men/ Mailman, Cleaning lady

We plan on tipping our sanitation guys since they have been walking to the side of our house to grab our garbage since my DH's accident. Such a life saver since I can never remember in time. Unfortunately we can only afford to give them $20, hope they're not offended Chat Icon

I don't think we're going to tip our sanitation men this year, because they keep breaking our garbage cans. They just slam them down and crack them. It's happened several times in the 6 years we've lived here. And the other day it just happened again. The money we would have tipped them will be going towards buying another new garbage can.

We usually tip our postman $20 or $25.

Re: Tipping Sanitation men/ Mailman, Cleaning lady

Mail person $20 and sanitation workers $20 per man (there are 3)

No cleaning lady

I see these gifts as a thank you for their hard work all year. I have family in sanitation so I know it's very appreciated.

I just left the post office 2yr ago when I had my twins. I had my own route in levittown. I would say more then half of people tip & the average is $25.
It's nice to be appreciated. It's also nice to offer water in summer when very hot.

I remember what you said in the last tipping thread...that got CRAZYYYY.

I tipped my mailman when I lived in an apartment because I was friendly with him and because he left a card in my mailbox. Now in a home, I never really thought to tip because I don't really 'know' him. I really think NYers tip too much.

I never see the sanitation guys or my mailperson. How would I give them a tip if I wanted to ? I don't want to offend them.

Oh no! The annual tip thread! Chat Icon As a Federal employee, the mailman is not allowed to accept a tip. Only Long Island do people seem to tip sanitation workers, it seems as if it's become a bribe to pick up larger items throughout the year? I argue about this with my Dad every year "but if I give them a tip they'll take furniture when I throw it out!" "Dad, that's not a tip, that's a bribe..."

I love OOS and don't tip either of them.

I'd tip the cleaning lady though if they've been with you for awhile.

This is not a Long Island thing. I've lived in 4 different states and they have always been tipped. Growing up, in Florida, my parents always tipped them.

Must be the new York transplants tipping in Florida! Chat Icon I live in central Florida and I don't know anyone who tips.

This was very helpful. I feel like most on not tipping my mailman and sanitation men. So majority rule is NO, so I am not tipping them. My cleaning lady will get one week extra pay. Chat Icon Thank you!

We're giving our mailman a $30 gc to Starbucks (i wanted to do $20 or 25 but DH ended up getting $30). And our newspaper delivery guy is getting $20. We tipped the sanitation men the first year we lived in our house and havent tipped again because they leave our cans in the middle of our driveway or just throw them off to the side.

we don't tip the mailman...sanitation we give $20 to each guy. Cleaning lady comes every two weeks and I give her an extra week's payment.

Tip the mailman. I give mine $20. Frankly I feel if I don't then I wont get as good service the next year. Right or wrong, that's the ONLY reason I tip the mailman.

I give the garbage men $20 each.

When I had a cleaning lady I gave her a week salary ($75) as a bonus.

I don't give my sanitation anything, or my mailman. I kind of get annoyed that I'm expected to tip them so that they take my large trash. Thats their job.

This just sparked a conversation with a corworker, who gives her garbagemen $50 each !! She compared it to buyng the teacher a gift. I don't think they compare at all! Teachers shell out a lot of money for classroom needs all through the year. And their job is much harder IMO.

I don't tip mail carrier. I live in a development so sanitation workers is not done either.

I have a wonderful cleaning lady that comes once every 4 weeks (can't afford more) so I give her half her pay

I can't afford more tips that that.

Well, I usually tip everyone but this year I might not tip my mailperson because she just won 5 million dollars in the lotto! Chat Icon Chat Icon She's working for one more year before she retires because she wants her full benefits! Couldnt of happened to a nicer person (except for myself, of course!)

The amount of money we spend on tips are nuts. My boyfriend lives in a doorman building and spends about $1,500 in tips at the holidays. I live in a non-doorman building so only have to tip my super but its unreal.

THIS. Couldnt agree more.

I dont get why they SHOULD be tipped.
I dont get tipped for my job and I provide a service every day. My husband protects and serves- what his job requires him to do.

Please.

My mom lives OOS. She complained for years about how her cans/lids would be thrown all over her yard, her large mail packages would be left in the rain, mail stuffed in her box. I kept telling her to tip them and see what happens. Starting last year she began tipping. Magically all of her complaints have disappeared. Yes, it is their job to do what they do, but somehow a tip makes (some of) them do their job better. Not right, but it is a reality and not just on LI.

We gift (tip) mail carrier and each sanitation worker $20

If anyone pulled this crap the last thing they would be getting is a tip..............I'd raise hell with the town. A tip is NOT a given and realistically, homeowners shouldn't have to tip their mail carriers and garbage men in order for them to do their job properly.

That being said, I don't tip anyone. Both my mail carrier and my garbage men do a fine job and it's not dependent on whether or not they are getting tips from me.

For real! We have never tipped and have never ever had an issue like this. If we did, I would be standing outside in my bunny slippers at 5 am to tell people off. I think people just like to throw money away Chat Icon my property taxes pay enough for these services.

I don't tip the cleaner , it's a luxury for me to shell out 90.00 every time she comes, can't / won't do more than that.
