Question about pricey hair dryers ?

What makes a fancy and pricey hair dryer worth it? It's all just hot air, right?

I always buy cheapo dryers and need a new one.
I'd love a dryer that dries my hair quick and makes it smooth. I don't have curly hair - a little wavy - but it's long.

Is it worth it for me to invest in a good one?
What would you recc?

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

I always buy the cheapie ones, too. I did use a relative's babyliss when I was in Ireland and didn't have my own with me. It was soo good. I don't know the model number or anything, but it dried my hair CRAZY fast and no frizz.

Thanks for asking this. I've been wondering the same thing. And debating buying the Rusk Speed Freak on a recommendation from my hair dresser.

I have a babyliss...and love it! First got one back in 2006...lasted me 7 years (actually still works but makes the squeaking sound in the beginning). I have thick thick hair and it dries my hair really fast!

Question about pricey hair dryers ?

But besides drying fast, it's still worth it?
I know that's a selling point, but I can do without it unless my hair will be shiny and amazing too Chat Icon

I still don't get how a cheap dyer can be any different - I have to google.

My hair is getting so long it's just a pain.

But some of the prices - wow! Then again you do use it daily.. And have it awhile. .. Hmm.

Here is the dryer I use...Babyliss Carrera I don't think it's really expensive ($50 will last me at least 5 years). There are some reviews at the bottom. I never realized the difference in my hair from hair dryer to hair dryer so I'm not the best judge of that.

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

There are definitely differences between the cheapie $10 dryers and the ones that cost more. I have about 5 different dryers that I've accumulated in my life (I am big into styling my hair), and I love using the ones from Vidal Sasoon and high end brands.

Differences are (1) speed & intensity at which they spew the hot air, (2) longevity (the cheapest dryer simply stopped blowing hot air after only 1 year of regular use!Chat Icon ). (3) special features (my VS one comes with a separate diffuser attachment for more body), and extra heat settings or longer cords on the more expensive models. Some also are quieter than others.

Does the Porcelain Ceramic make a difference?

My hair is on the thinner side. So it already dries fast. I just want something that helps smooth it.

Question about pricey hair dryers ?

My hair is healthier, shinier, less frizzy, and so much less damaged now that I use a pro dryer as opposed to a cheap Conair from Target. Mine wasn't too expensive either. Folica.com has some great ones and they always have a sale going on.

That's not bad at all. Mine usually cost about $15- $20 from Target or Duane Reade and they only ever last a year, possibly 2 if I'm lucky (or lazy and don't do my hair as often, lol!).

Thanks all!

My cheapo is about to die. It's starting to smell like it's burning
No good. I am calling out sick the day that I wake up and it doesn't work - because I can't air dry my hair without looking like medusa. I must act quick!

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

I had a Chi for about 6 years and it died in July. I bought a Conair from CVS that morning because I was there and I needed it.

The next morning I tried to blow out my hair and the difference was clear! I have slightly wavy hair and it frizzed like crazy and took forever to dry. I bought a Babyliss that afternoon. No cheapies for me ever again!!

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

My cheapie one also just died (I always buy Conair and Revlon from drugstore) and due to recommendations I decided to try a Babyliss to see what the fuss was about. I didn't go super expensive to start. I bought one in the $50-75 range. It doesn't dry my hair as fast as my cheapie but I feel like it isn't burning my hair. I don't smell my hair burning anymore - good thing! My hair has been smoother and less frizzy. I have natural frizz waves hair and blow it out everyday straight. I am hooked! : )

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

FWIW I bought a Chi hairdryer because my old Conair one shorted out (after 10 years). It lasted 1 year!!!! It shorted and never blew hot air again. No warranty would cover it so I was SOL. I bought a Revlon hairdryer for $25 to replace it and 3 years later its still going strong. I never saw ANY difference in my hair from the more expensive dryer.

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

Yes it's so worth it! I had a babyliss pro for over 7 yrs. I just bought a Rusk, 2000 watt. The difference in wattage is incredible also. My hair is wavy and fine, but I have a lot of it. 2000 watt ionic hair dryers make it so smooth and frizz free.

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

I just bought the Babyliss and I def notice a difference between that and the cheapy hair dryers. Not only does it dry my hair a lot faster it's frizz free and smoother. I felt that the cheaper dryers left my hair frizzy!

I use the revlon dryer (purple and silver) it breaks every 1-2 yrs but its under $30. I bought a travel baby bliss for my trip last week and it broke the second day. I'm returning it back to BBB!

Re: Question about pricey hair dryers ?

I have the perfect solution for you! Bed Bath and Beyond sells Babyliss. They also do price match. The Babyliss dryers on Amazon sell for cheap. Just do a price match. If you have an amazon app on your phone, you can just scan the barcode of the one you want! I sent my cousin there, and she bought a $100 dryer for like $44. They don't let you combine the 20% coupons, and the price match though..that's just getting greedy, lolol!
