When to try CIO
At what age would it be best to do CIO? I am very blessed that my 14 week old sleeps through the night 11pm to 830am. However, she will only sleep in her RNP. If I put her in her crib she wakes up crying during the night. It is not because she is hungry - I just have to rock her back to sleep and have to put her back into her RNP, not back into the crib (otherwise we repeat the crying just a few hours later). I want her to get into her crib (have posted about this a few times) and feel like the only way I will be able to accomplish it is CIO. Not sure when she will be old enough for that.

When to try CIO
They recommend not doing CIO until after six months. I do know people (one was a pediatric resident at the time) who did it earlier and had success.

Re: When to try CIO
What wrong with letting LO sleep in the RNP? You can even keep it in the nursery. Maybe LO has a touch of reflux causing the night wakings. The RNP would help since it elevates LOs head.
We started CIO probably around 5-6 months. We had too. She would cry anyway just to protest going to sleep. It was either we held DD and let pull our hair and slap our faces all while crying, or let her self soothe herself in her crib.

Not true. I have read plenty on it and you can do it as early as 12 weeks.
I did it at 4 months.

When to try CIO
My ds used to do the same thing. He would only sleep in his swing. Swaddling him used to help a lot.

I highly doubt she has reflux. At 14 weeks old she has literally spit up only 3 times in her entire life.

RNP is in her bedroom. But I am concerned about the back of her head. She gets tons and tons of tummy time and time sitting up (she loves to sit up while holding my hands in my lap) and yet she has a small flat spot back there. I want to get her into her crib. The problem in the crib seems to be that she kicks her legs around and wakes herself up.

When to try CIO
I'm going to try at 6 months. DS is 5 months now. He goes to bed with no problem, but he has to be sleeping already and his bedtime fluctuates between 8-10. I'd like him to be down at 8.

How long have you done the crib to rnp? When I started the switch I let her lead. The first night she made it 1.5 hours. The second night was 3 hours and the third night was 6 hours. She did better each night and now she sleeps through. She'll stir sometimes now but her pacifier will put her right back.

Reflux doesn't always lead to spitting up. DD had silent reflux and rarely spit up. It would go back down, which can hurt more. The RNP is more secure for them too. The crib is such a wide open space. I always used the sleep sack at night. You can use e one with the swaddle and just swaddle the body and not the arms. Good luck!

She hates being swaddled. She even kicked herself hysterically out of the miracle blanket.

Dd is 5.5 months and is still in the rnp at night (she had terrible silent reflux and is just now growing out of it enough to sleep flat so we will be transitioning her out soon)
She has no issues with the shape if her head at all. If anything I would think the crib wouldn't be any better to help a flat spot. That and she's young still, her head can still adjust.
To answer your original question I know of parents who did CIO as young as 4 months. Personally I wouldn't do it younger then 6 months.

I have the Snugabunny RNP and it has a hard plastic shell under the cushioning. It seems much harder than the crib mattress. That's why I think the crib will possibly help.

When to try CIO
My ds got too mobile at 4 months so we had to move him out of the RNP. He hated the crib just because it was different than the RNP. We had to do CIO. Otherwise we would have had no place for him to sleep safely.
My ds also had a flat spot. It got amazingly better once he was out of the RNP. He also started belly sleeping around the same time.

My DD is also becoming mobile. When I walk in the room to get her and she is awake she starts doing like a crunch/situp type motion and she actually can get her back and head off the back of the RNP. She is probably still OK in there but I don't know for how much longer she will be.
I feel pretty sure her flat spot is from the RNP too. She is not in her infant car seat or swing very often. When she's awake she spends most of her time sitting up in my lap or doing tummy time. I can't see any other reason for the flatness.
