Croup question..

My 4 yr old DS was diagnosed with croup the other day. I just thought it was viral bc he wasn't even coughing at all. A cough here and there, but I can count on 1 hand how many times he coughs and doesn't cough at night either. I know bc he wound up sleeping in my room since he had a fever.
Started Saturday night he was off and was warm. Sunday he had a fever and nothing else so just gave him Advil and that helped. Still hardly a cough that I remember. Yesterday I gave him Advil at 2 and he was till out of it an hour later so when I took his temp and it was 102 I decided to go to doctor. At the doctor he was coughing a little and she thought it sounded like croup, but wasnt sure. Prescribed him prednisone and stuff for the nebulizer. Did both and today he seemed better. A little cough here and there but no fever anymore. He has been clingy ans winey, but he was also sick with a fever. Oh, and he tends to be winey anyway.
Thoughts?

How long does croup last ans how long can you be contagious if you hav it? I'm keeping an eye on the fever, which he hasn't had since Monday night.

I am not sure if it is contagious.
But when my kids had it the cough was unmistakable...a bark..that was worse at night. We had one or two "bad nights" and then a few other not so bad nights. And then if I remember correctly it turns into a regular old cold but I could be wrong (my kids were sick alot their first 1.5 years and I may be mixing things up)

No coughing at night at all. That's why I didn't think it was croup. I think it's a virus with a cough, but he hardly coughs.
At least the fever went away and he's still a little winey, but then again he always is. LOL

Croup question..

DD has had croup a few times. Always starts at night for her. The cough is unmistakable - sounds exactly like a seal barking. Then she gets a cold after. When DD has had croup, she's usually home for 3-5 days from school.

Re: Croup question..

You would know, but I don't think they necessarily have to be coughing up a storm for them to have it. Their vocal chords swell up and that is what makes that sound. I think the coughing just needs to run its course and it isn't contagious, not the coughing anyway. The fever could be,

I agree with this. DD gets croup all the time. But as she got older her cough wasn't was bad as wheN when she was a baby. I believe my dr. Said it was because now when her vocal cords swell the space isn't as small and there is more room.

Croup is not contagious....it's the cold that they get that's contagious.

Hope he feels better soon!

Re: Croup question..

Thanks all! Not sure what it was, but he's doing much better. A little cough left, but sounds like just breaking up the mucus. Hasn't had a fever since Monday. Gave her the prednizone and been doing the nebulizer anyway bc it helps.

Croup question..

My DS just had the croup, the cough is very noticeable. It sounds like a seal bark almost, he had it bad for two nights then it eased up. at the time i had a 2 month old and was told to keep them away from each other that it is contagious

Croup question..

A kid in daycare had it a few mi the back, my son caught it from him and then my DD caught it from my son a few days later. They didn't have any other symptoms just the cough. Our ped wouldn't clear ten for daycare until they were clear of croup. They didn't cough a lot either but did wind up with fevers. Room a few days to get out of their system but the steroids helped tremendously! Also sitting in the steamy bathroom.
