Help me put some weight on DD!

So, my DD's weight has gradually declined from the 50th percentile to the 10-25th. At almost a year, she is 18.5 lbs. We need to put weight on her by increasing her caloric intake to about 900 calories per day. She drinks very poor bottles, so I need to focus on the food. The only problem is that she cannot have dairy.I feel so sad for her. She loves cheese, and pasta with butter but we have to cut it all out for now. Chat Icon Please give me some good ideas of how to bulk her up without dairy. TIA!

Re: Help me put some weight on DD!

My Dr. told me to increase DD's calories and put weight on too . At her 1 year visit, she weighed in at 19.5 lbs. 26 percentile.

She explained to me to drizzle olive oil on her food. It's 150 calories per teaspoon or something like that. She said to cook with butter.

I just added on some extra snacks :)

Yup, olive oil was mentioned to us too. I bought a mild tasting one today, because I thought she might not like it. Can't do butter right now because of dairy. I also am going to make sure that she has her 2 snacks per day. she doesn't always. even if it's just a fruit pouch, it's something.

Try coconut oil too. I would really aim for high calorie foods. I make DD eggs in coconut oil and add ham if I have it. She has that with banana and toast or waffles in the morning. Can you do yogurt? I usually do a yogurt pouch for lunch and DD loves the yogurt melts, just be careful of the brands. DD had a reaction to the happy baby ones bc they have whey protein added but she's fine with the gerber. I like that it's a snack that has a little protein and it's not messy. She also has kashi cereal bars as a snack. It's messy but I'll do peanut butter on crackers for lunch some days too. Dinner is rough here, but pasta or rice is usually a hit. I add some olive oil and garlic to her pasta and she likes that. I also give her peas most nights since they have some protein. We do breaded chicken or pork chops, meatballs, sausage but most days the meat is a hit or miss.

Does she like avacados - you could mash them and top a bagel or waffle with a smear of avacado
Mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes with dinner?
Bananas for a snack?

Great post, we are having the exact same issue. DS is dairy intolerant and not a good bottle drinker (takes like 3 oz at this point in each bottle). This : http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/product/original-buttery-spread/ is a great butter alternative that tastes very buttery (I know because its all I have been able to have due to breastfeeding him) and can be used in baking/pasta etc

Re: Help me put some weight on DD!

We had the same thing with DD. Ironically she also weighed 18.5 lbs at her one year. She also has slowly been dropping from about 25th perc. to now just below 5th at 18 months and just shy of 20.5 lbs.

The "problem" is that DD loves healthy food. She will eat an entire plate of veggies for dinner, broccoli, squash, snap peas, etc. I sneak in chicken and stuff but I guess its not enough. She snacks on fruits and maybe one serving a day of cereal or crackers.

She is a good eater and drinks 18oz of milk a day plus yogurt and cheese. Ive been doing the olive oil as well. You can mix it in anything and you don't taste it. I put in applesauce, oatmeal, etc. She also likes olives. I try to give peanut butter often (dont know if you've given yet). The dr mentioned the caloric powder you can add to food but I wasnt fond of the idea. Sometimes I worry but then I remember DH is small and has very good metabolism and DD is very active.

Re: Help me put some weight on DD!

DD is also around 20 lbs and is 12 mo, is that bad? She eats just about everything i give her. She has not had cheese, yogurt or milk yet.
I give her avacados (her favorite) bananas, green beans, wax beens, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, pasta with butter, chicken, beef, liverwurst, egg yolks, waffles. I have apple butter which I want to try.
My problem is that I dont know how much meat is too much for her.

Arent kids supposed to lean down after 12 months because they are moving more? How could you stay in the same percentile if thats true

I was going to recommend Earth Balance as well. My first son had a milk protein allergy for his first year and I was EBF, so I had to cut out all dairy. This was the BEST butter alternative we found. He's almost 3.5 now, and it's still the only butter we buy because it tastes so good! We get the kind with olive oil in it.

Re: Help me put some weight on DD!

First off I am jealous of all of you ladies with your daughters weighing 18.5lbs at a year....my DD is going to be 2 in 3 weeks and she is just 18lbs Chat Icon. Anyways we have done a TON to add more calories into my DD's diet along with consulting with 2 different nutritionists. I would love to share some of the really helpful tips that were shared....

-Avocados are great...very high calorie. My DD still likes them mashed mixed with apple sauce.
-Definitely drizzling oils ontop of different foods, every tablespoon is 125calories. I find that olive oil has a very strong taste that sometimes the kids wont like...so we were recommended Flax oil and sunflower oil (both you can buy at trader joes) and coconut oil is great.
-I basically make all of my DD's snacks/muffins/foods...I make sure I use all full fat ingredients.
-Flax seeds/flax meal are also full of nutrition and calories. They are very bland and do not really taste like anything. We sprinkle them ontop of pancakes, waffles, yogurts, etc.
-When I make her pancakes or waffles for breakfast i make sure I add pure maple syrup as well as a tablespoon of some type of jelly/jam/spread that she can dip the breakfast in. A tablespoon of a jelly/jam is usually anywhere from 60-100 calories
-lastly i make her a "shake" everyday. Its annoying and time consuming, but she enjoys it and its full of calories. I use a cup of milk (but you could use any dairy free milk...I use Almond for her triplet brother who is dairy free), 1/2 cup of yogurt (I use coconut milk yogurt for my son..its delicious) a tablespoon of flax oil, and then I blend it all together with some fresh fruit. Its typically about 300 calories.

Let me know if you have any other questions. This is honestly been my life for the last 2 years. My daughter has never been on the growth charts and was even had a diagnosis of FTT for 4 months this winter. Good luck!!!!

My boys can't have dairy and we have the same issue. I cook everything in coconut oil and even add a spoon full to oatmeal, etc. They drink almond and coconut milks, coconut yogurts with granola in it, banana, berries, even a spoonful of melted peanut butter in it. Waffles with peanut butter on them. Vans makes frozen dairy free waffles. We eat Ezekial sprouted bread without hidden dairy. For lunches and dinners I make grilled chicken with coconut oil and cut it up and serve it in a bowl of brown rice, black beans, tomatoes, green onions, lots of guac, and salsa too. Another meal could be toast with peanut butter on it, hamburgers with all the toppings on it. Sweet potato fries. Snacks could be coconut Ice cream, almond milk pudding cups.

My DD is 12m 1 week and weighs 18 lbs... Doc didn't say anything about beefing her up. How tall is your DD?

Eta: I'm wondering if I should be concerned... Sorry I have no suggestions for food.

Oh thanks! That's an awesome idea. We use a lot of margarine in my house because we're kosher and don't mix meat and dairy, but I wasn't eager to give that to DD. This looks like a good alternative.

I think my DD had 4 bottles today that totaled 11 oz in all. She generally takes 3-5 oz. Her 3 month old cousin drinks more! I've given up that battle, finally.

Your post made me feel better because I know your DD and have seen that she's a typically-developing kid. I get myself all worked up that DD is not getting enough nutrients, and then is not going to meet certain milestones because of it. My latest crazy worry is because DD has been cruising since 8.5 months, but hasn't started walking on her own at almost a year. I convinced myself that because she isn't drinking/eating enough, she isn't building up the bone and muscle strength needed to walk independently. I'm certifiable! Chat Icon

The actual weight of the baby isn't what's important, it's how the baby's own growth curve has changed or not. Peds look for the baby to stay generally on the same growth curve/percentile. If there is a big drop, that's when they start to talk about beefing them up. Or on the other end of it, if there is a sudden jump in percentiles, they would discuss slowing down/lessening intake. My first son was 18lbs. at a year old, 5th percentile, but he had been 5th percentile since 4 months old, so there was no concern- he was growing in his own curve. HTH!

These are all wonderful ideas! Thank you so much, N! I need to find a way to manage my time better so that I can prepare more foods from scratch for DD. After work, I have trouble figuring out what to heat up, much less what to cook. Our weekends are always so busy, but I need to find a way to prepare and freeze things like dairy-free pancakes and waffles.

LOVE the idea of flax seed and flax oil...those are also wonderful for brain development.

I give DD plain avocado all the time, but I like the idea of doing different things with them. Time to get creative around here!

Yes, this is what I was going to say. The concern is that my DD's percentile keeps dropping. When I was concerned about her at the beginning (from about 2 months on), everyone kept reassuring me that she was staying on her growth curve. I knew that that was not going to maintain, and 9 months later, here we are. Her length has remained the same. DH said that she measured 29.5 inches today, right at the 50th %ile. She's my string bean!

More awesome ideas! I haven't introduced coconut or almond yet at all, but once her stool clears up, I'm going to start so that we can use these ingredients.

Exactly this.
My DS is tiny. He's 3 years of and only weighs 28lbs. But aside from being born big (8lbs5z) he's been small all along. He is always under the 10% for weight and around average for height. I've asked the Dr if I should try to beef him up and he says, no need. He's growing on a steady (albeit low) rate.

Chat Icon Same here. DD was cruising probably about the same time and I thought she would walk early. She didnt walk until 13 months. I've always noticed she seems to be on the later end of certian physical developmental milestones but early on cognitive development.

I had to respond to this because I know this feeling and it is awful! My dd has always been an awful eater. At 3 she is much much much better but at the ages you are talking about she barely ate anything and I worried all the time how her brain and body could thrive on such little nutrients. Well I wanted to write because she always did! She did
Everything way ahead- talked super early .full sentences by 1.5..stood on her own at seven months / took steps at 9 mos / walked fully on her own no more crawling at 11 months etc. now at 3 she blows me away - she is even staring to read basic words all on her own. Anyway, my point is your dd will be fine! Pls don't worry. I am telling you my dd would not even try any meat at all until she was 2.5 and was always in the 10-25 percentile.

To answer the op- I wish I could help- my dd lives on dairy unfortunately that is her favourite foods and that makes it easier to get the fat/calories in her. I agree with he above avocado is great- some days my dd eats an entire avocado. Not sure if it is dairy free but also you could try drinks like pediasure.

Good luck I know it's hard!
