UPDATE...When did your child sit forward facing in car seat?
I feel like my 18 month old is getting squished in his car seat...I know the recommendation is that a child be between 1-3 and and be rear facing, but I just don't see how this is possible...his poor little legs are getting bent....when did you switch it around? Going to a car seat safety even tomorrow, so I'm hoping they can help me out...thanks for your input 
UPDATE: So, I went to a car seat safety check in Farmingdale today and I talked to the safety inspector and he checked the seat and my son sitting in it. He explained the benefits of having the seat rear facing...and I totally agreed...so my little guy is still a rear facing baby....I rather risk him having broken legs than a brain or spinal injury...never thought of it that way....totally scary....I really appreciate all of your input and advice....Thank you all so much

When did your child sit forward facing in car seat?
I switched it at 2...and had the blessing of a car seat safety expert.

My DS was so squished rear facing. I turned him forward facing at 14 months.

I switched my twins at 18. At the time I was 8 months pregnant and needed the extra room for my seat to go back because of my big belly. They were both well over 20 lbs. so I was perfectly fine with my decision to do it.

When did your child sit forward facing in car seat?
There is nothing wrong with having to bend knees in the car. My son turned 3 in January and is still rear facing. He either sits cross legged in the car, or will occasionally stretch his legs out and up the seat back. The recommendation for rear facing is until AT LEAST 2, but the longer you can keep them that way, the safer they are. HTH!

My twins were switched at 2 when the recommendation was still 1. My youngest is now 2 and I have no plans of switching her until she is at least 3. She never complains at all. Their legs being bent don't matter at all. You may think they look uncomfortable, but chances are they don't care!

Both mine were switched at 1. I had no issue with changing them. They did not make driving easy while rear facing.

2.5. DS almost reached the weight limit and we got a new car. I'm pregnant with twins and him being able to climb into the seat by himself is very helpful.

Ds was just over 2 and the only reason i switched him is because DD2 was on her way and we moved ds from behind the passenger seat to behind the drivers seat and couldnt keep the seat rf because there wouldn't be enough room for me to drive. If i could have kept him RF I would have.

This exactly! DD is 21 months and still RFIng. And she's 90+% for height. They're not squished or uncomfortable.

Nothing wrong with knees bent.
They are 19 months now.
We will switch when they reach the weight limit. Definitely not before they are 2 years old.

DS is 19 months and still rear facing. He is over 30lbs and in the 90% for height and just either bends his legs or kicks them up on the back of the seat. Im not sure when we will turn him around but definitely not before 2.

Switched DS one month before his 4th birthday.
While the recommendation is two, the longer the better. Ideally, age four. A rear facing child is 500% safer than a forward facing child. Isn't that insane? 500%!!!!!!
And while they may look uncomfortable to us or squished, they're not. My son never once complained!! Never! RFimg was all he knew. And if you are all that concerned, I personally would prefer a broken leg over a broken neck.
