outside iron railings or stainless steel?
which do you ladies have and or prefer? i ron railings are more easier on the eye with a pretty design, the only thing is that you have to maintain it by painting over it every 2-5 years...we plan on gettin outside porch railings and double door driveway gates...and advice would be great!!

SS seems to be a trend in Queens. 
I personally don't like the look of it - too shiny and very obvious looking.
I would think that it would also get really hot in the sun.

We have iron and prefer it.
Yes, it's going to be a project this summer to repaint it. But that's like...a day's work every few years. No biggie.
Stainless steel...ehh...it's all the rage in Queens (where we live) and I gotta say, I hate the look of it. It's too new and shiny looking on houses that aren't new. It just looks out of place most of the time.
Iron is more classic. Timeless. Not shiny.

i know i agree, iron railings are simplier and less flashy than the SS. but then again there is no maintenance on the SS.
how do you guys maintin the iron?

Have SS in the city. Hate the look. DH put it when he bought the house before we got married. It doesn't get hot but it's not my style considering we have a beautiful Pre 1900 house. What was my DH thinking  I'll change it to iron once we cross off other things off our list of home makeovers
Eta: we always clean it in the spring to get it shiny because it does look water stained from precip and all the NYC grime

Ours have only been in a year. But if I remember correctly I was told it was coated with some type of rust proofing and would last about 8-10yrs.

Iron if you have an older house. We just got some for our stairs. Couldn't believe how expensive they are.
