For those whose DCs take swim class at Y....
How long did your child stay in one group/class?
My older DS (almost 5yo) is on his 6th class in Pike. I realize every kid learns differently and that it's all about exposure and water safety, and DS is off in la-la land during most of the class but should I call the aquatics teacher and ask them to push him more?

This is why we no longer go there. I did not feel like he was learning much. It is typical for children to repeat classes several times there. I like our new place much better.

Re: For those whose DCs take swim class at Y....
I have had the same problem with my son. He was in Pikes for two years! I finally insisted that they move him ahead and they did. He did well but now he's in eels and the same situation is happening. I spoke to the instructor this session and said this was it for this level. On the one hand I don't want to move him ahead if he's not ready but I also feel like a cash cow. Two years at one level, and a year and a half at the next. He's the oldest kid in his class now. The only thing I can suggest is to keep talking to the instructor and/or aquatics director to make sure they know you're aware.

do you mind me asking which YMCA you are going to? The most that we have had to repeat a lever was 2 times. We go to the Y in Patchogue

This is why I'm worried -- we go to Patchogue and have several family friends who also go there with their DCs. My DS is the only one we've heard of repeating classes. At this rate (6 x $100), I'm thinking of bumping up to a set of private lessons to get him swimming better -- my ultimate goal isn't to just move him up -- I live by the water and want him to learn to swim well, KWIM?

Re: For those whose DCs take swim class at Y....
My daughter started at the y in Patchogue at 3 year old we started a group class and then pulled her out and put her in a private one on one at the Y instead. I didn't feel like she was ready to be in a class setting when the rest of the children had been in this class before and my DD had not been in any swim class before I was way to nervous. I will continue with the private lessons until I feel comfortable being in a group lesson swimming.
I have also been thru a couple of swim instructors there.

DD was a pike for 2 sessions, and just became an eel. Her next calls, her 3rd, will be as an eel.
Is your DC comfortable with putting his face in the water? That's the requirement for an eel.
