I thought it really doesn't matter who we vote for in NY, since we are always a Blue state??
I have visited other states and watched campain commericals for president that will never be aired in NY. Because NY is notoriously blue. No point in Republicans spending money in state that they will never win.

Am I the only person who can't see how ANYONE can be on the fence btwn one or the other?
I can understand not liking either candidate but they are pretty much opposite from each other with regard to their platforms.

Long Island is predominantly Republican. I think it might have changed in the last election, I'm not sure.

Personally, I totally agree with you and see your point. However, I understand how people can be 'on the fence'. As the OP said, many people are simply stuck between what their personal beliefs about rights etc. are, and what the financial situation is. I don't think Romney is better for the economy, but many people do. So even though they don't like much of what he/the GoP stand for, they are considering voting for him because of the hope that he can make some change.

My mom is still on the fence. She thinks Romney might be better for the economy and her own financial situation but she isn't sure she can bring herself to vote republican because she disagrees with the party's position on pretty much every social issue and a lot of other platforms.

I guess the things I dislike about Obama are the things I like about Romney. Conversely, the things that I hate about Romney are things I align myself more with Obama on. And then there is the strength of emotion tied to various categories.
For example.. I DESPISE Romney's ideology on gay rights. But I loathe Obama's anti-Israel stance even more. So i have to think which person is more likely to effect negative change relevant to those issues. And I have to weight what is more important to me..
And it goes down the line like that..

Yes, NY is blue and is likely to remain so. But the presidential election is not the only one that will happen that day.
And no matter who I vote for.. I will be counted. I am not about to let my vote go unvoiced because of the electoral college.

It does matter. IMO voting for the person who has your issue at the forefront of his or campaign makes the others in the party take notice.
let's say I voted for a Green party candidate because of the issues I support, the Dems & Republicans have to start to take notice of those votes if they want to get them in the next election.
I also believe there is additional funding for 3rd party candidates.
But let's say I always vote democrat & then suddenly I start voting Republican. If more & more NYers voted Republicans, then the Democrats would have to wonder what was wrong with their platforms & maybe have to take notice.

Took the poll. I was 79% obama and 71% jill stein.
However, even so, I am not thrilled with voting for Obama. On the other hand, I am NOT voting for Romney.

Some people are Independent because their views really do fall in between the two parties. Some people are very far to one side and can't fathom how anyone can be in the middle or the other side. I think those of us who fall in the middle are just dying for someone who is more moderate to be backed by one of the major parties.

I see what you’re saying but it can be because you may ((complete 'for example')) be totally be FOR Romney's fiscal policy but HATE his social policy, so you may try to weigh "well, gay marriage is my most important issue and Romney's against it, but I hate Obama’s health care plan"
For example, when I do the ‘I side with’ things, I get 67% one candidate and 65% the other!

My response is probably going to be rather complicated and confusing!
For the last two presidential elections, I considered myself entirely Democratic. As a result, the decision was easy.
I've recently become pro-life. Abortion, regardless of what side I was on, and gay marriage have always been the two most important issues to me. Problem is...I'm now very pro-gay marriage and very pro-life. I'm having a hard time figuring out who to vote because of this.
Ultimately, I do not want Romney to win. If Romney and Obama were the only two choices, I would vote for Obama. However, as I'm evaluating my personal beliefs, I don't know if I can vote for someone with whom I disagree so strongly on an issue that is so important to me.
I know Obama is going to win NY, so I may find a candidate who matches my views on these two issues and do a write-in. I don't know yet. If I were in a state where I didn't think Obama would win, I'd vote for him.
Ultimately, I want Obama to win the election, but I don't know if I can personally vote for him.

Yeah seriously. I hate to say this, sort of, but you seem to be a bit immature about this. A number of us agree fiscally with one and socially with another. Not sure why that is difficult to understand.

It doesn't matter that the candidates have made their platforms known, it's not that people here are uneducated about their stances, it's that those people here are QUESTIONING how to reconcile certain philosophical differences they with their potential candidate. It's not a matter of learning anything more, it's a matter of taking the information that has been presented, processing it thoroughly, and then making a decision in respect to a candidate that the person feels confident in. It's not nearly as cut and dried as you make it seem to be, people really do struggle with making the right choice for themselves because they're thinking of their own personal circumstances, how their candidates legislation will affect them, their children, work...in essence, their livelihood. I wouldn't dare to begrudge anyone their struggle in picking a candidate, because it shows me that those people CARE about their vote instead of being an apathetic asshole.

I actually try not to get into the political discussions for reasons opposite LB - I am sooo strongly one way that I feel as though my (serious) respect for everyone's opinions can get lost online. I know how I feel and what I believe and what my opinions are, and even though I strongly oppose the other side of my views, everyone is entitled. And I think people taking the time to think deeply about the issues and how to best choose the way they exercise their very important right to vote is such a wonderful thing.
So kudos to those of you who ARE struggling, for doing just that! Stay informed, keep digging, keep struggling and ultimately vote the way that you feel comfortable voting!

No, I think it's AWESOME that people choose to struggle and learn rather than giving up or taking someone else's word for it.
I can see being with one candidate on social issues and another on fiscal issues. My husband is extremely leftist on social issues, but leans a touch conservative on fiscal issues.
I feel like these candidates are SO far apart that it's hard for me personally to imagine a position where someone truly feels in the middle and also these men have been in politics for so long, that i also feel like we know about all we're going to know about them that's of substance.
I don't think it's immature to say that I can't personally understand someone else's position. Everyone has their own experiences and perspective.
It's kind of like how it's sometimes hard for me to have conversations with people in my family who are on the extreme right. We see things SO differently that it's like we're not even speaking the same language, the assumptions we make are opposite.
And maybe that's the sad part about politics today. Everything is SO SO extreme.

what is very hard is knowing that I might agree with a policy that the president wants to put in place but knowing it also has to go through the house and the senate. So fiscal policies I might agree with probably won't be passed if the side doesn't have the votes in congress. That being said I will probably vote Obama (but still debating and listening to the issues) but it sucks knowing that congress is mostly republican so they won't back his ideas. But if I go with Romney then I'm risking losing my job since he wants to get rid of government jobs and being a female doesn't seem to work with him
