Anyone NOT take narcotics for pain right after c-section?

I'm scared of having morphine, Percocet, etc.

Am I kidding myself that I might be able to get through it with only Motrin-type medication?

I didn't take anything. I wasn't in any pain after my c-section so I didn't need any. I have a high pain threshold.

They gave me morphine in the OR. I didn't know it until I had a reaction to it... Then I only had Tylenol for the first 24 hours and then some Motrin... It wasn't bad at all...

I took a Percocet one time in the hospital and it didn't take the pain away just made me loopy. After that I didn't take it.

I only had Motrin. I did not want to take anything stronger due to the fact I was breastfeeding and was petrified that it would cross my milk.

Same here. And I found the pain very manageable with the Motrin. I also got up and started walking as soon as the nurses wanted me to. Being mobile helped my recovery I believe.

I was in a lot of pain and definitely needed more than Motrin. I had an emergency c-section.

when I was given the spinal block, i was also give a 12 hour pain medication intravenously. Other than that though, I only took prescription strength motrin, which is basically taking two over the counter motrins. That was sufficient for me, although I think I do have a high threshold to pain.

I have bad reactions to narcotic pain medications. I actually probably had a reaction to the one that was given to me intravenously. I was in recovery for over 5 hours because my temp droppedd to 95degrees.

My first and 3rd babies were c/s. I never took anything more than 800-mg motrin in the hospital. Weaned off of that before I went home on day 4.

I hope you don't need morphine! Percoset didn't do that much for me. I popped Motrin like it was my job, though.

Anyone NOT take narcotics for pain right after c-section?

I took Tylenol 3 in the hospital and was given Vicodin at home. I took it and Motrin. I have a "funny shaped uterus" to quote my OB and was cut almost hip to hip. I needed the pain control, and coming home to a toddler I couldn't rest. I say take it if you need it, but don't be hero about it. It's major abd surgery! Talk to your docs about your fears. There are so many meds out there and they can find one that would work for you. I also took the Vicodin right after I nursed so there was time between nursing.

#1 no pain meds at all
#2 dr called me a fool and told me to take percocet so that my family will enjoy me.

Me! I took one dose of percoset and it made me SO loopy, I didn't want to feel like that while BFing and holding my DS. I stuck with Motrin and walked a lot and I was fine.

I never took anything. Even though they said I could take something and still bf, I didn't want to. I wasn't pain free but I prefered it over being drugged up.

Re: Anyone NOT take narcotics for pain right after c-section?

I only had morphine (duramorph which I didn't ask for or know I was getting) with my second but opted out with my third because it made me so itchy, I'd rather have the pain. Also out of the three deliveries I only tried Percocet once, I didn't like the way it made me feel and honestly Motrin helped my pain more.

i dont think this is one of those things you should have any expectations or plans.

if you are in pain and they offer you something strong that will allow you to feel better and possibly move around more/sooner (which is very important after a cs) you should def consider it. i wouldn't have a set idea in your head that you do or don't want to take something after the birth. many things will be unexpected and out of your control so there isn't much reason to pre-plan this stuff.

that being said, i had an emergency c-section and was on a morphine pump for 48 hours followed by percocet until i left the hospital 5 days later. if you asked me beforehand i would think that i wouldn't have wanted narcotics either, but things change very quickly. once i left the hospital i took 3 advil or motrin EVERY 3 hours for about 6 weeks before my pain was manageable enough to stop.

I didn't even take Motrin. Once I was in my room and the drug from the actual surgery were gone I didn't take anything. My dr was amazing and I believe he was a big reason I had zero pain.

Re: Anyone NOT take narcotics for pain right after c-section?

With DS1 (somehow I remember his cs much better than DS2Chat Icon ) anyway, my spinal started to wear off at hte end of surgery. By the time I got to recovery I was in pain. They gave me something that just didnt cut it. Then they gave me a morphine pump. I was able to control it. So if I was in pain, I gave myself a little shot. Sometiems I needed it other times I could go hours with nothing. After they took out my IVs the next AM. I never took anything more than motrin. I never filled my scripts for pain meds when leaving the hospital.

DS2, I had an epi. I dont know what I was getting for pain but again I had control of it. I had DS at 830pm and the next AM, when they came in to take my roommates epi and stuff out, I nearly jumped out of bed and wanted mine out. SO I had all the tubes (and therefore pain meds) out by 7am. This time I took some pain meds by only at night because since having DS1 I have sleeping issues and knew I needed sleep. I also had a rash on my back from the tape used to target hte epi site and it made it uncomfy to sleep therefore the pain meds helped me. I took pain meds for 1 day after coming home (which was 4 days after DS was born) THen nothing.

I think you can do it with minimal pain meds depending on your pain threshold. I am lucky to have pretty high pain treshold and I am stubborn and dont like taking meds if I dont feel its 100% necessary!

GL!

I took Motrin only after both c-sections. I took the Percocet once at night in the hospital to help me sleep. My twins were in the NICU so they didn't bring them to me for night feelings or anything.
