Labor Day has new meaning for me
Ive been having bh contractions since 26 weeks (im 33 now) and they started to get a little painful.. more like a bad menstrual cramp..fstill only 1-2 per hour though. Called my dr on Monday and since the office was closed they directed me to get checked out at LIJ-2 days later,Im still here. Turns out Baby A's heart rate was decelerating with thecontractions and as I was here the contractiions started coming every 2-4 minutes they wanted me to take a steroid-betamethazone and improve the babies lung functions in case of early delivery which they expected to have to perforrm Monday night. Since my dr. wasn't here, I emailed him to find out what his thoughts were.. he said take the shots, and he was coming in-which he did (I think he was on call anyway though) So they gave me the shots 24 hrs apart-, and put me on magnesium to slow down the contractions and it worked. Im still here but off the monitors and meds because thankfully my body cooperated (and so did the baby) her heart rate has been normal since yesterday even with contractions. And as of 3 am I havent had any contractions at all-they took me off the magnesium at 12 am last night... All I have to say is that the medical team here is absolutely amazing. I do feel aweful that i had to take a steroid and use the magnesium-I havent taken anything my whole entire pregnancy so naturally I was worried about what complications may come. Al the Dr's assured me that the benefits far outweigh the risks. And what choice did I have? If I didn't do it, I would have ended up giving birth Monday night
So I guess Im a little torn, but overall Im so glad I trusted my instincts and called the Dr. My contractions were only 1-2 per hour.. which in any normal situation doesn't warrant a call to the Dr.
I feel blessed but still worried about any potential side effects these drugs may have had-Im sure Ill be googling and asking the experts here but again, i made the right decision and will be so glad to be going home today/tomorrow with my two still inside my belly

Re: Labor Day has new meaning for me
Yikes, that must have been very scary! I'm glad that the interventions worked to stop labor! I would try not to be too upset about the drugs, I would imagine any complications due to an early birth would be worse than the meds (which SO many women have taken). I hope you have smooth sailing from here on out!

Labor Day has new meaning for me
do not for one second feel bad about the steroids or mag!! they are absolutely necessary!!
i delivered at 33w and was able to get the steroids a few days before delivery. DD did spend a month in the NICU but she had absolutely no lung issues - she was born with the cord around her neck and was tiny for her gestational age but spent less than 48 hours with oxygen support. i 10000% believe this is due to the steroids, and there is a large amount of research that shows a drastic drop in fatalities and lung issues of preemies after the steroid shots were introduced. the mag is also horrible but generally doesn't have long term side effects. i have heard that when given during delivery can cause the baby to be a bit lethargic (i mean god knows how lethargic it makes mommy ) but once the med is cleared from the baby's body, there are no known side effects.
IMO from going through it i cant imagine turning down any meds that would help either not have a preemie, or at least help the development of the baby if they have to be born premature!! the benefits of the meds FAR outweigh the risks!!
good luck, def FM if you have any questions or want to chat!!

don't feel bad! The steroid and magnesium are definitely necessary.
I ended up delivering my twins at 27wk5d, but was in the hospital starting at 24wk0d. In that time, I had 2 rounds of the steroids and multiple doses of the magnesium (which is god awful ). Honestly, I feel like if I didn't have all those drugs my babies may not have stayed in those extra 3 1/2 weeks and may not even be here today. The benefits of the drugs definitely outweigh the risks so please don't feel guilty. You need to do whatever you can to keep those little girls cookin!
Good luck!!!

How in the world did you manage being in the hosp with those meds and tied to the bed for that long? I know we do what we have to do but after only 48 hrs, I was having a little breakdown getting so scared. You're a strong person to have handled the hosp bed rest for so long and then caring for infants in the nicu! really, I mean that! I have a whole new appreciation for it all now.

I'm so glad you are able to keep your girls cooking for longer! The meds definitley outweigh everything so don't even worry. Your Dr. wouldn't have given them to you if they were so bad.

I was hoping you'd chime in!! Thank you so much for your feedback. And yes, the mag SUCKED for mommy! I dont know how you kept it together whille preparing for that delivery but THANK YOU for your post. Im feeling better and more conifdent that I did the right thing.
The way I kept it together for delivery was Denial!! Seriously though, even on hospital bedrest I was SO sure I would make it to 36 weeks. Even when my doctor said I had 10-14 days, I still thought I would be fine. Major denial! It didn't work either, I delivered only 5 days later.
Mag was the worst. I was on it the day I delivered and then for 2 days after. The worst part was that after delivery when I was on mag I couldn't go to the NICU to see the baby so I didn't see her for the first time until almost 48 hours after I delivered.
Anyway good luck!! Good job keeping those babies in there!!

I'll probably regret knowing the answer - But what is the mag treatment like - what makes it so horrible?
