Dead bird in backyard? West Nile?
What should I do with a dead bird we found in our backyard? First thought was West Nile, but then I remembered hearing a bang/sound on Sunday and thought it was a bird hitting our back window.
It is in the back corner of our yard, under a maple tree, which is about 40' from our back window -- is it possible he/she was injured and hobbled to the back corner of the yard before he/she died?Should I be worried about West Nile? If so, do I do anything in particular to dispose of it?

What area are you in?
In Suffolk there have been reports of birds & mosquito that have tested positive for West Nile.
Residents are asked to call the Department of Health Services’ Public Health Hotline at 631-787-2200, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m and 4 p.m. if they spot dead birds in their community. Calls made during non-business hours could be left on the phone answering machine.

Thank you for this info -- I'm in Suffolk, south shore...I'm going to call right now. My 2.5yo has three mosquito bites on his shin this morning, DH thought I was being paranoid about West Nile but now I'm even more nervous.

Had to call 853-3055 to speak with someone. They only test if the bird has been dead for less than 24hrs, so they suggested I double-bag the bird and leave him in the trash.

It's a circular message. 
Press 2 for West Nile Concerns, Press 8 for operator for West Nile Concerns.
Pressing 8 brings you back to main menu -- not an operator.
I just called - hit 2, then 8 & a new message comes on telling you to call
631-853-3055

This is what DH and I do. We've lived in our house for 2 months and already had 3 dead birds. But I know it's because they fly into the windows in our family room, not from anything else. How do I know? They left full body impressions in our glass..
