Re: Low Opinion of Teachers?

I have held off on responding to this threat because it just makes me so sad that people feel this way about my chosen career. I am not going to go into the laundry list about why I deserve the pay I get, the time off etc. I am just going to say that the general public should be happy that they can send their children away from home 5 days a week, 7 hours a day, and know that they are taken care of and are being educated by people who have their very best interests at heart. I do not deserve a million dollars. I do not deserve a Nobel Peace Prize. However, I do not deserve to be berated. I do not deserve to be treated like a thief. I do deserve some respect. If you can’t give it, then go back to what you learned in kindergarten. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”
Well said!! Thank you!!! I love teaching and wouldn't trade it in for the world. I feel the pressure and the demands that are being put on us. I HATE it!!! But it is what it is. I can't lose sight of my purpose. Bottom line:My job is to educate our future. I take my job seriously and love each of my children. If someone has a low opinion of teaching it is only because they truly don't understand what goes into a day of teaching. I believe if they spent a day in a classroom their opinion would change. People are so quick to judge someone else.

Re: Low Opinion of Teachers?
Oh boy...
As a teacher, I of course have to chime in. Listen, it's all been said. I have nothing new to add. But I think people find it easy to criticize teachers and our salaries because they pay taxes which pay our salaries. I get it. But I have a Masters degree, 60 graduate credits ABOVE that, and still take professional development classes/workshops every year. This will be my 15th year teaching and feel my salary matches my education and work experience. I am thankful for it each and every day.
We have "job security" because, well, that's a perk of the job! Teachers can only be hired once a year - so it's very much UNLIKE the corporate world where you can get hired/fired any time of the year. We need to be protected so budget issues don't wipe out the top paying teachers just to make ends meet. If we leave our job for another district, we can't negotiate our salaries. If I left my $100k+ salary in my current district, I'd have to start at square 1 in another district, likely for more than 1/2 the pay. We don't take the salary with us. Hence, the NEED for job security.
Anyway, I'll stop there. I can go on and on about how many TRUE hours I work a week vs. what's on the books. But I think that's already been said....

Re: Low Opinion of Teachers?
guess what people, we ALL pay more of our hard earned dollars no matter what profession we are in than those who earn MILLIONS of dollars in "investments".
so let's keep kicking each other while the fat keep getting fatter.
we deserve to burn

Re: Low Opinion of Teachers?
Well I think it largely depends on the teachers - like ANY profession there are some amazing ones out there that work very hard and excellent teachers and there are some that are not so great or better yet horrible who give the goods ones a bad name. Honestly I don't get how people complain about teachers OR ANY jobs. I think with ANY job there are various levels - I know people who do the same type of job in various companies and the hours and expectations can vary greatly - so I don't think you can always generalize and say that they all work x hours or all do x y or z.
You have a choice as to what you want to become. You are not born and told or directed into a certain profession as can be the case in some countries. You could choose to be a teacher, a lawyer, a doctor, a musician, engineer, etc. We all make choices. Are some overpaid - maybe - but I'm sure that some good ones are underpaid as well. If having summers off was something that people complain is unfair -then they should have gone into teaching. If you have kids who is going to be the one who spends the majority of their day with your child helping them learn when they are not home? Your child's teacher. No I am not a teacher btw. But I have had some excellent ones who have pushed me in the past to reach my potential. But I have also have one or two that didn't belong in the field. Wish there was a better way to weed those ones out but reward the ones who deserve it.
As far as having to take more credits etc. I think many fields are required to do some sort of additional training in one form or another. Attorney's take CLE, doctors - well my friend has spent her entire summer studying because her certification is expiring and she has to be reboard certified. So the additional credits do mean more money - but I look at it like a continuing education that many professions have to take. BTW many of the teachers I know did not take the summers off they worked all summer because they needed the extra money. Also there are so many different areas and some are less demanding or challenging than others. So it really depends on the choices that you make. I don't really see a lot of people dumping on teachers in general - but I DO hear them dumping on ones that generally do not work as hard or are the bad apples but it only a few and not all teachers in general.

I'm a teacher and I think it's because people are envious of our hours so take their jealousy out by bashing us. Oh well. I always tell them that they can go back to school to become a teacher at anytime. You CHOOSE your profession!
I think that right there is the problem, and I apoloize if this was already stated but I can't read all the pages of this thread right now. People who are unenthusiastic/unfit/DONT BELONG in a classroom will go through the education process and become a teacher and wind up miserable -- just because they think it's so great because of the hours/vacations/etc. And that's a shit-azz reason to become a teacher. The teachers who genuinely enjoy it and belong in the profession truly do stand out from their unhappy counterparts. It really is hard work, and it seems that a lot of people have a misconception about how easy it is, so they either a) become teachers and are unpleasantly surprised that it requires true effort and commitment, or b) bash teachers
As a lawyer, YES i am jealous of the teachers time off, but NO i would not trade because for one, I don't have the patience to deal with that many children/young adults, and b) going to work that early in the morning is NOT for me. At least i know my limits, lol.

All of these people with low opinions and lack of respect for teachers pass that message onto their children and then there is very little respect from the students. They also go into school with the attitude that their education is not important and we are to stupid to teach them anything and then people wonder why scores are what they are! look at the opinions and treatment of teachers in other countries and their test scoresf and you will see a link!
