R&P transition

My DS is 5 1/2 months and has been sleeping in the R&P from day one. He started STTN at 6 weeks and has ever since. Last night we began the transition to the crib and it was a total nightmare. He was up every 1/2 hour. He was crying and lifting his legs like he didn't know what to do with them Chat Icon He will sleep if we give him an A&A breathable blanket, but as soon as he falls asleep I take it back, and then he flips out. Eventually at 3am we took him out and put him back in the R&P and sure enough he slept straight till 9am. Anyone have this experience and have any tips? I am working on naps too in the crib, he will do 1 hour tops. Edited to add the 2nd night of trying the crib resulted in 20 minute increments and screaming until finally we gave in. Anyone else have any tips?

Re: R&P transition

you're doing better than i am. the most my son will do in the crib is 30 minutes for naps.

Our problem also is that he was swaddled in the rnp. My son is 5 1/2 months as well and the swaddling needs to end.

Disaster all around. Chat Icon

omg..this is my ds...he is 14 weeks STTN since 10 weeks..and I am try ing to have him nap in crib...20 minutes in he is lifting his legs in air and hysterica! I just read DH your post and we know we too are doomed! lol I think I may start transitioning him to PNP at night...maybe have him fall asleep in RNP and then move him???? Not sure..keep us posted..I am curious if there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Re: R&P transition

Thank god I am not alone on this. I spent my entire day researching and coming up with ideas. Here is a few things I am going to try, I have no idea if any will work.
I sat him up in his crib today (he is sitting unassisted now) and put all his toys in there. I played with him in it for about 2 hours straight. I screamed YAY every few minutes and played his mobile. I am hoping a few days of that and he will think its a treat to be in there

We are going to put him to sleep in the crib again tonight and try to keep him calm. If after 3 hours he is still upset, we are going to put him back in the R&P, hopefully getting a bit longer stretch each night.
I am also going to give him a few bikini's to hold so he has something to grab on to.

As much as the R&P saved my sanity over the past few months, it is so much worse right now Chat Icon
I would leave him in the R&P for another month or two, he is on the small side, but he hasn't been rolling and my DH is convinced its because he is crammed in there.

Do you have any other ideas of what you might try? We are in a one bedroom so I didn't want to set up the Pack and Play unless necessary.

we waited until almost 8m to transition DD from RNP to crib. we started with naps for a day or two which were def shorter than normal but not terrible. then we just put her in the crib for the night, already asleep. she STTN that first night and every single night since (Chat Icon ) . i just think if they are ready they are ready and if they aren't then whats the harm in keeping the in the RNP longer if they are good sleepers? we even put her RNP in her room for about a month before the transition just to get her used to it.

either way, good luck!!!

Did your DD roll around 4-6 months? My DS isn't rolling and I am not sure if its because of the way he is in the R&P or if maybe hes just a late roller.

Re: R&P transition

well ladies, last night my husband and i moved him after he was asleep and it was no good! he woke up and then he'd lose the pacifier every 5 minutes which meant we had to go in. we finally gave up after 30 minutes and put him back in the rnp, swaddled.

Re: R&P transition

We made it through!!! The first night was terrible we let him cry with us in the room with him for 5 hours. He cried every 15 minutes. It was terrible. Eventually we put him in the R&P. The next night I moved his pack and play to where his R&P normally was (right by my side of the bed). We also put books under the mattress to elevate him. He slept OK. Then Tuesday night we put him in the crib and elevated it. I slept next to him on the floor. He slept the whole night! not one peep. Same thing again last night. We decided to move the crib next to our bed for now (we are in a one bedroom). I can't believe the transition ended up being so easy! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

she was close to 6m when she started rolling but she was a preemie so her adjusted age was closer to 4m. maybe it was because of the RNP but i doubt it since shes 14m now and not walking yet so i think she's just slower on the mechanical skills (also her adjusted age is 12m and her mechanical skills have been closer to her adjusted age than to her real age).

Re: R&P transition

I just transitioned my 6 mo DD a few nights ago from both the swaddle and R&P. I too was terrified, especially after a few half-assed attempts that were disastrous. Finally I had enough, also convinced she wasn't rolling because of the R&P. Put her in for bedtime, she cried for 20 minutes, went in and rubbed her belly and sung to her while she was on her back in the crib. She fell asleep, I walked out, said a prayer and transition was done. She's been sleeping and napping (mostly) great in the crib ever since, and rolling like a champ literally within a day of being in her crib. Just rip off the bandaid! I feel like a new woman!
