He wasn't on the "down low", or in the closet, or keeping anything a secret necessarily.
He just simply never commented on his private life one way or another.
I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist.

My understanding is he never meant it to be a secret, but just like straight celebrities don't announce their heterosexuality to the public, he didn't feel that he had to announce his sexual orientation. However, I totally agree with everything said in this article, and while he SHOULDN'T have to announce it, unfortunately we're still in a place where him doing so can help young people struggling and can help bring positive attention and provide role models, so I'm glad he did!
