Babies and Cats

So DH and I have three adopted female cats who are absolutely wonderful and they are our little fur babies. We have heard of all these stories that cats can climb into the crib with the baby and accidentally smother them by lying on their faces, or even on their chests which can prevent their lungs from expanding. Cats do love snuggling, especially with something warm, so this doesn't seem so shocking.

Our plan is to not allow the cats into our room at all (they usually sleep in our room and often on our bed) once we move into our house in about a week and a half, this way they won't associate the baby with not being allowed in the room. But I do feel terrible about doing this - I don't want them to feel abandoned. (The baby will be in our room for a few months, this is why I don't want the cats in our room.) Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Babies and Cats

I only have one cat, but we kept him out of whatever room DD was in. I didn't want him hopping into her bassinet or crib or swing. I never thought he'd be malicious, but he's a HUGE tomcat and could smother her w/o even noticing.

He was a little sad, but he was used to being an "only child" for 6 years. Your cats will have each other and will probably be fine.

Now she loves him (and loves to chase him. She calls him MeowMeow lol).

Awwww so cute!!! Yes, our cats are so sweet and I know they wouldn't be malicious but I do worry about the smothering. I'm even worried one might sneak in when the door is a little open!!! I'm neurotic nelly.

Re: Babies and Cats

Maybe if you buy them nice beds in the new house they'll like the new set-up? Though I'm sure that's not as awesome as sleeping on a human's head. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Babies and Cats

Have a newborn at home and 2 cats. We kept the cats out of our room for about a week when baby came home. They actually were standoffish and stayed away in a room they never sleep in. And our cats are the complete opposite. They love being around us 24/7 so it was an adjustment for them. Now we leave our bedroom door open and they now come in but really don't even go around the baby. Once LO is in her own room, we will keep her door closed. Right now baby sleeps in a rock n play so even if a cat wanted to hop in, they really wouldn't even be ale to sit on her face bc of the incline. At least that's what I would assume.

When DH and I sleep we usually close the bedroom door and out cat and dog are not allowed in. We're planning on doing the same with LO when she comes and if shes sleeping in the room we will close the door.

Re: Babies and Cats

We had no problems with baby and clover. DD was in our room in the rock n play until 4 mos, and clover would still sleep on the edge of our bed, facing the rock n play, like she was guarding DD. We do close DD's bedroom door while she is sleeping now that she's in her own room, but i honestly can say that the cat has never once tried to go in there. Not even when the door was wide open. Every kitty is different but I am sure you will be fine.

Re: Babies and Cats

Our cat was spoiled rotten before DS came along and I had the same concern like you have about him being near him.

Well, the minute we brought DS home, the cat just stayed away from him. He could sense that there was someone new in the house but wasn't sure what to think.

DS is now 22 months and the cat still won't let him get near him for more than a few seconds before taking off.

The one place the cat is obsessed with being is on the changing pad. I am constantly washing and changing the cover because he won't stay off of it. So there is always cat hair on it Chat Icon

I've learned to keep the cover off until I need to put DS on it. The cat won't go on it when its just the plastic.

I was worried about the same thing! My little guy loves to snuggle.

What about a crib tent - I was thinking that might be a good option. I am nervous the cat might slip between my legs in the middle of the night and get into the baby's room or something.

Has anyone used a crib tent? I kind of feel like its trapping the baby a little bit but might be an option?

Re: Babies and Cats

We have 2 cats and we stopped letting them sleep in our room or even on the 2nd floor a little while before DS was born. Now they are just used to it. The come upstairs once in a while but stay out of DS's room...probably cuz he scares the crap out of them... Chat Icon Chat Icon
