Lamaze classes

hi.... i am 6 months pregnant with my first child and I was looking into taking Lamaze classes... I live in Nassau county. Some people say the classes are a waste of time and money. Anyone have any recommendations or comments for me.. Is it worth it?? what about prenatal yoga?? TYIA

You might want to look into Bradley classes. You & your partner will be very well prepared & learn a lot!

Yoga is always lovely - never took a prenatal class (none near me) - but if your doctor gives you the ok , go for it!

I too took Bradley classes which in my opinion are better than Lamaze class and certainly better than the courses given at hospitals.

Re: Lamaze classes

We took the course offered through New Baby Belly. I believe they are a vendor on here (had DS in 2008). I agree that lamaze would've totally been a waste of time for us.

They covered everything and it was only a few hours, with another couple.

DH would've never gone to classes that were weeks long.

My doctor at the time gave me a hard time because she never heard of them and made it out almost like she was getting a kick back from the hospital for playing up the importance of lamaze.

Re: Lamaze classes

Lamaze is kinda the "old" way of going into child birth (from our parents' time). There are so many other natural childbirth methods out there, including Bradley and modifications of it, that have been shown to be better for mommy and baby. What about a general childbirth class? A lot of hospitals offer them in one day (we took a 6-week class every Tuesday night I think it was at our hospital, but I'm OOS and that schedule worked well with us) so it's not too big a time commitment, but you learn so much!

If you're interested in a non-medicated birth, it's definitely a great idea to take a class of some sort. If you know already that you want to get the epidural, you probably don't need to take anything since the nurses will guide you well during L&D.

Totally agree. DH and I took a Bradley Class with Celeste Rachell, and she is awesome!

I took prenatal yoga too, and thought it was great.

Re: Lamaze classes

i don't know the difference between lamaze and any other form of childbirth class as i am going to be a 1st time mommy - but i will suggest taking something with your SO. my mom was a delivery room nurse for 30 years and said she has seen way too many women need a c-section for the sole reason that they don't push properly - and a class will definitely help you with that. plus she said the father's that have been through a class and have some understanding of what's going on, tend to be better in the delivery room.
