Tax grievance

Hi everyone,

I have a question and hope someone may know. My wife and I filed in 2010 to grieve taxes for the 2011/12 year in nassau county.

I guess the tax rolls have been finalized so we finally received our bill. The statement reads that this is a bill for 1st stage tax reduction.

Does anyone know what is meant by that "1st stage"? Are there other stages?

The reason its so important is that we actually don't own the house anymore. It has been sold and therefore we will pay this bill, but wonder if we are open to other bills. 2011/12 taxes are finalized.

Thank You
Eddie

Re: Tax grievance

I'm assuming you received a bill from the grievance company you used and not a tax bill.

If its from the service you used, they are billing you because Nassau county approved your grievance and reduced the assessment on the property on the final assessment roll from the value shown on the tentative roll.

You need to locate your original retainer agreement with the company you used and see what it says about what happens when you sell the property.

Depending on when you sold you may not benefit from this reduction so I don't see how you would be liable for any fee. The norm is that they would bill the new owner.
