Parents of 2 or more children ...

I am expecting baby #2 around the end of July. I also have a 2 year, 3 month old son who is very active . Come September my husband will need to return to work from FMLA. I know I will need a C-Section so I will need help at home the first two weeks and lucky to have DH around until September but plan on enrolling DS in pre school because I feel I will need bonding time and he currently has no other children to interact with. My options for preschool are 2 days a week, 3 days or 4 days a week ( 2.5 hours a day. Of course we need to pay for this. How many days do you think is reasonable? I thought 23 days might be a happy medium, 2 days might not be enough with chores and a newborn to deal with. 4 days might become too expensive. Any thoughts?

Re: Parents of 2 or more children ...

Honestly I would only do 2 days. I had a c-section and after 2wks was home alone with my 23month old and my newborn. We did fine. I am thinking about starting Emmy back into daycare on Wednesday mornings from 8a-12p so I can run errands and so on. I love having both kids at home and it has really helped her adjust to being a big sister! I do have to say I have some very very very mellow easy going kids that sleep great though so i'm biasedChat Icon

That is why I do not want to do 4 days ... but they are only allowing 2.5 hours per day so that is nothing. 5 hours ... do run errands with a newborn and time to bond ... 5 hours during the week is not enough. Plus my son is a very active child. Because he goes to preschool for 7.5 hours during the week he is not getting him the time to adjust being a big brother?

He will be 2.5 when the baby is born? I say 2 or 3 days. My 2 year old goes 2 days now, and me ds didn't start until 3. I like the little tot program and I think it's good for the kids, but I think starting out at 4 days may be too much.

Re: Parents of 2 or more children ...

my son goes 3 days a week for 2 1/2 hours. He was 3 years, 3 months when he started preschool. I have a 7 week old baby now.

3 days is perfect, however keep in mind that schlepping him to and from by yourself with a baby is a little getting used to. Chat Icon Kind of throws off nap times.

I like the 3 days. On the other two i schedule doctor appointments, dentist, haircuts, playdates, etc etc. ESPECIALLY since my son still takes a 2-3 hour nap every afternoon. Those 2 mornings off from school are the only times to get stuff done for him. Chat Icon

I used to have to schlepp him to dr. appointments at times 2-3 times a week with me last summer and we are talking 8:00/8:30 appointments ... I am not wrrried about that. He will be 3 11/25/09 and we are looking to start him in a program this September (when he will be two months shy of this 3rd birthday).

I understand what you mean. What I don't understand about it being difficult is that working mom's do it all the time. You learn to adapt. Even if I do it for a PM class ... just budget my time ... allow a few extra minutes .. if it means having two hours to do errands/ cleaning it is worth it.

Yes i know. I am a ftwm. I wasn't saying it was difficult. I said it takes some getting used to.

You asked how many days and i answered saying my son does 3 and it's perfect. I wasn't judging or saying it's not worth it.

I would do just the 2 days because if you are the one going to have to pick him up from school it may be more work than it's worth since it is only 2.5 hours and it may interfere with your baby's naps (waking the baby to go get your older one etc).

But it would only take about 5 minutes to get him. I have already dealt with stuff like this with my son. We will get through it. The new baby will probably sleep through it allChat Icon

Re: Parents of 2 or more children ...

You dont seem to really want anyone's feed back here. I am basing this on your "I have an answer for everything" attitude....but I will give you my 2 cents any way....

Having 2 kids is no joke...its harder than you will imagine it to be. Having to get 2 kids anywhere on time is not always easy.
I babysat FT for my friend prior to having DS2 and yet it was quite an adjustment.

Anyway, I say 2 days at that age is enough, however if you have a kid who is really eager to go and you are confident there will be no separation issues, go for 3. I say skip 4, definitely more trouble than its worth.

If you think your little one will sleep through everything without knowing the LO's personality great. My second, doesnt want to miss a thing, you so much as cough and he is awake.

I wake DS2 3x a week from his morning nap to go pick up DS1. In the cold, or after a long weekend, or just a bad sleep night, getting everyone fed, dressed, and out the door is not fun...but yes its possible.

The woman on here were offering insight, experiences and opinions, if you dont want them dont post a question, if you do want them, maybe try not to fire back against everyone who is attempting to answer YOUR question.

My DS was a few months old when dd started school this past sept- she was a little over 2. I originally had her enrolled for two days at 2.5 hrs but then switched to 3 days. Sooooo glad I did. It's a very nice break and she loves it too. Plus between holidays and her getting sick and missing school if she only went 2 days in the first place there wouldn't be enough continuity.

4 days-we are talking 2.5 hours a day, that's really not a lot of time so I would do 4 to give yourself a chance to do chores, errands, sit around for a second.
