my thoughts on excercise

This is an ivf baby so I know I am already overprotective. When I got phg my re doc said I could do lighrt excercise etc. Well I never did bc I was sick as a dog and wayyyyyy tooo paranoid. Fast forward to 11 weeks when I went to my reg ob. I found out that day from him and rthjen a perinatologist. That I had placenta previa and should NOT be excercising or having sex for risk of bleeding. I eventually did start bleeding at 14 weeks and just was told around 20 weeks that pelvic rest was over and I can lightly excercise if I want. Soooo I just worry for so many of us who are told to have sex and exceercise early on. I felt like a lazy fat bum for not going to the gym but now I am soooo glad for my paranoia cause I could only imagine what if. I know most pgs don't have this issue but imo better safe than sorry in the early stages especially. Now only problem is why am I still not going to work out? Lol haha

Re: my thoughts on excercise

My conversation with my ob went something like this:

OB: Exercise is fine. Keep on doing whatever you were doing.

Me: What if I wasn't exactly doing anything?

Her: Don't start.

Me: Not a problem.

I had been going to the gym until February 2011. Then I was in the 2WW for an IUI, and was being cautious...got PG, wasn't viable, was depressed...got PG again in April...m/ced...was on a nice long break for the summer, but still never went back! Chat Icon

I totally agree with you... Your first trimester is sooo important to get through and there is SOOO MUCH that can go wrong, I say take every single precaution possible. I think exercise with too much jumping around and jarring movement cannot be good for something as delicate as the growing baby in your belly...

Re: my thoughts on excercise

People have to do what they feel comfortable with. I didn't exercise in my first trimester for a few reasons.

1. My zumba girl was opening a new studio
2. I wanted to get to 12 weeks to make sure that exercise wouldn't put any stress on my body.
3. I was too damn tired and went to bed at 8pm every night.

Now that I'm exercising again (15 weeks) i feel great. I can understand why women would want to do this from the beginning if they feel they can.

ETA: I did go to Zumba once (around 6 weeks) with my last pregnancy that I miscarried. I still beat myself up that that's the reason it happened. Some things are just out of our control though.

Re: my thoughts on excercise

I was very nervous in the first trimester too. Even though my Dr said it was ok to continue with my routine I just couldnt. I am in my second trimester and will be going this weekend to sign up for a different gym that has a pool. I think I will feel most comfortable swimming since it's really low impact. I just cannot see myself running again and having my poor LO bouncing around, lol

Your body is working hard enough making enough nutrients for you and your baby. No need to make it do more

Don't get how working out is gonna help while you're pregnant. You are gonna get big no matter how much you work out.

Re: my thoughts on excercise

It is so hard during the first trimester!! I was addicted to the gym before I got pregnant. I went to spin class 5 times a week, and had a trainer twice a week. I was determined to work straight through preganancy.. But boy did the first trimester kick my butt! Now that I am starting to feel better, I've started going back to the gym and it feels great. But I am paranoid about doing too much. I have a heart rate monitor that I check almost every minute.Chat Icon You just have to listen to your body and not do anything it isn't used to.

For me, it's not about trying to not lose weight - Zumba class helps me mentally after taking care of two boys all day long.

I highly doubt anyone is working out to not get big...

It actually helps a lot during pregnancy and during L&D. A stronger body makes it easier to carry the added weight, you'll have less back and leg issues, and the pressure on your joints will be reduced. It will help keep your body fat, heart rate and blood pressure lower - all good stuff for the baby.
The stronger you are, the easier it is to push that baby out! I was in active labor for barely 4 hours and pushed for about 30 minutes - and I had a BIG baby.

Is it for everyone? No of course not, nothing is. Do some women push too far? Yup. But there is no reason to say that women who workout are doing their baby a disservice, because most likely, it's the exact opposite. In fact, exercise during a healthy, "normal", pregnancy is highly recommended by health care professionals.

Agree with the above poster.

I'm in my 5th week and still running and teaching kickboxing, though taking several breaks to walk during my runs and modifying my kickboxing class so I am not as high impact and just talk through the ab routine instead of doing them. It actually makes me feel a lot better and energizes me because I'm been so tired!

Re: my thoughts on excercise

hi guys...i agree about a healthy normal pregnancy to be able to excercise is great fo ryou and baby.

i guess what i was trying to say it...i WAS told by a doc that all was okay and to excercise if i wanted.

but a few weeks later at a place that had different machines they saw the placenta issue.

and in my experience....sometimes in the beginning its hard to know exactly whats going on in there unless your docs have super high end machines.

i am just glad i didnt listen in the beginning bc if i HAD gone back to excercising too soon....i could have been having a much different outcome.

and i just feel bad that so many women pressure themselves or feel bad that they slow down or dont feel well enough to excercise much.

i think all pgs are different and just want everyone to be well!Chat Icon

Re: my thoughts on excercise

As an Ivf pregnancy, with twins, I have done nothing but sit on my butt all day. I have not seen the inside of a gym since ttc.

One of my drs said light elliptical is fine, but honestly, I don't want to risk it.

I agree as well! I'm 28 weeks and still super active. On days where I do nothing I feel like crap, bloat and have no energy. As long as you were doing it prior to pregnancy it's fine. My job is super physical and even a hi risk ob gyn okayed me continuing. He said if I have 4,5, or six contractions in an hour that don't subside with water and rest then he'd reconsider.

Re: my thoughts on excercise

I think exercise isgreat during pregnancy. I was placed on bed rest initially. Now cleared to start up again- but not even close to what i was doing. ( was training for an up coming half marathon). I can walk for 20-30 minutes a day, or every other day. Been trying to get in atleast a mile or so. No weights nothing strenuous- atleast until the baby is born..
