Daycare related-aggressive behavior

Im not much of a poster but an avid lurker and I could use the advice of other daycare moms.

Today I got a call that my daughter was bit by another child at daycare (a girl). This isn't the first instance of aggressive behavior that shes been involved in. Even this morning when I dropped her off a little boy walked up to her and pushed her. My daughter is in the 18-24m room.

Is this behavior just "normal"? My daughter has never been the "perpetrator" but always the "victim".

I'm afraid shes not going to want to go to daycare if these types of instances continue. I also don't want her to start modelling this behavior and I don't want to worry every time I drop her off that shes going to be subject to abuse.

Am I over reacting? Is there something I should do?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Daycare related-aggressive behavior

A year ago i'd be livid reading this.. but I have to tell you.. it's definitely the age!! my son was bit 11..yes 11 times. by different kids.

I called child care council..they inspected the daycare and found NOTHING wrong.. they even held a class at the daycare...

It's a really tough age...they are learning boundaries.

Just make sure they are address and disciplining the children accordingly and giving the victim lots of love and attention.

Re: Daycare related-aggressive behavior

I think the age group that your daughter is at, some of the behaviors are normal for some kids. Often times i found that kids who cannot communicate at that age, were often the aggressors bc they became frustrated more easily. With that said, continued behaviors by the same child should be seen as a specific problem with that child and its the daycares responsibility to handle it. When my son was getting bit very often by the same child. I expressed my dissatisfaction, as did other parents, and they "shadowed" the boy. It did not work, and they discharged the kid form the center. i felt bad bc this kid was unable to verbally communicate effectively, became frustrated and then bit other kids. But, I had enough and it was time for the kid to go.

Unfortunately this is normal. My DS has been on both ends of the stick and more so on the end when he is on the receiving end of the aggressive behavior. As long as they are keeping you in the loop about the behavior and there isn't any alarming scars, I would leave it along. Most of the time they don't remember anything happened. The get hit, cry and go back to playing. It's us parents that can't move on.

I totally agree with Linda. It is definitely the age. DD was bitten just a few weeks ago by another 2yo, unfortunately it's just something that they need to learn and hopefully your DD isn't the victim anymoreChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Daycare related-aggressive behavior

I was just reading a book on dealing with toddlers and it is definitely the age. I'm not looking forward to this as DS is now in the 1-2 year old house and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he gets bit or bites. Luckily I'm pretty much the only one he will bite (sucks for me Chat Icon ) and he hasn't even done that much lately.
