Re: Why are there no posts on anything going on in Wall Street?

I swore to myself that I would not respond to this thread. I am not looking to engage anyone - this is more about catharsis for me before I implode.

Does Wall Street as an industry have problem? yes. Does our government have problems? Yes. However, pointing fingers and villanizing wall street will get us nowhere because when it comes down to it we, as a global society NEED Wall Street.

If you own a home and have a mortgage - you do so because Wall Street exists
If you lease or finance a car - you do so because wall street exists
If you have a credit card - you have it because Wall street exists
If you have a 401K. Pension, life insurance, roth IRA etc. - you have it because Wall street exists
If you want to start a business and get a loan - you can get finding because Wall Street exists
When the economy crashed companuies were able to stay afloat because they through secured and unsecured debt aka nonds because Wall Street exists.

Wall street, as a worldwide industry, provides MILLIONS of jobs. When Wall Street is prospering OUR city prospers. And when wall street was booming EVERONE was punch drunk - ncluding the citizens. The housing market is bad not JUST because of Wall Street. There is anouther component - the people. We cannot blame everything on Wall street without being accountable for our own actions. People purchased houses that THEY KNEW they could nto afford - why? Because a bank told them to? No, my father was not an educated man and he knew better than that. They did it because they were not happy with a small house etc. they wanted a BIGGER one.

As wall street goes so goes the nation. Wall Street is greedy? YES but, guess what? SO are we as a society. Believe me Wall street does not have the market cornered on Greed.

WE ALL did this as a society, iincluding Wall Street, yes but ourselves as well. We can't just pass the buck on accountability by calling ourselves "the little people"

I have a million more things I could say but I'll stop.

Re: Why are there no posts on anything going on in Wall Street?

Here is what Elizabeth Warren has to say about Class Warfare:

“You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.
“Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

there were banks and loans before there was wall street.

and again, I will say that I believe Wall STreet is being called out as an entity, not necessarily the people who work there.

of course there are people entangled there. of course they employ a huge number of people throughout the world. we as a society have laid all of our eggs in the Wall STreet basket at some point over the last 100 or so years. and again we are getting burned by it. we have no learned from the crashes or the recessions.

I understand you work for a wall street firm and this hits close to home for you. but the simple fact is, SOMETHING has to be done.

and you are damned right that I will vilify ANY company that does not pay taxes. why should we not? b/c they employ people? b/c they emply me or you or my grandpa. NO.

wrong is wrong is wrong. and until people stop internalizing and see that there is something VERY funky going on, within these walls that we inhabit, we are going to go down, kicking and screaming at each other.

OK, so WE are changing. WE have no choice. WE are trying to be frugal, trying to save our pennies. WE changed and now its time for "Wall Street" to give a little too. No one is calling for Wall Street to be wiped out of existence, just some reform -- change, more contribution, fair tax laws.

I just wanted to add...

Why should the 1% care about anynody when the 99% does not care about anyone either. I mean come on, nobody will even give up their seat for a pregnant woman and we expect people to give up their money?? Let us not act like the 99% is all compassion and rainbows.

We all created this society and now we want to 1% to fix it? How about starting small? Let's hold the door open for someone, or help with their bags or anything.

The truth is - no one in the 100% cares about each other. The end.

You know.. I would argue with you but some of the posts on this thread have actually proven that point for you.

But it isn't 100% of us. Some of us do care. Some of us didn't have compassion.. but now they realize how wrong that was. Some of us weren't effected.. but now we are.

We have to change. It has to start somewhere.

If you are playing baseball and it's bottom of the 9th and you are losing by 10 runs.. and you can choose anyone to get up to bat.. you won't choose the guy who trips when he walks. You aren't going to choose the guy who hasn't gotten a single hit all year. You are going to tell your biggest, heaviest hitter to get in there. And you aren't going to tell him to bunt - you are going to tell him to aim for the effing bleachers.

Same thing here. Nobody really wants Wall Street to go away. But gee.. wouldn't it be nice if they were the ones who started leading by example. Start with hiring and paying taxes and paying a fair amount of taxes instead of trying to find every possible way they can to earn more and pay less.

QUOTE]

Yes, there were but who do you think would get the loans? again, that top 1%. Because if you are a bank and have only $1 million to lend, who are you going to lend it to? The person/entity who has the highest probability of paying you back. When the Secondary market opened, now that $1 million would regenerate, so that same bank could lend those funds over and over again to more and more people.

Well said. Of course there is no denying that there are unethical people on Wall Street (just as there are in every other part of the country), but making Wall St. the scapegoat of our country's problems is not fair.

What i hate about this board, and I am guilty of it, is you cannot have an opinion. I cannot have a voice unless it is with the majority or I agree with you. Everyone has different life experiences so everyone has a different point of view.

If I think one way who are you to say that I am wrong.

I'm not seeing that anyone is telling you to shut up. I think people are engaging in a debate. Come back with points, stats, etc.

I love seeing back up on opposing opinions & I'm not against changing my opinion once I've seen facts.

Another point I'd like to respond to is I don't believe that Wall Streeters are all in the 1%. The problem lies in Congress, the lobbyists, the laws, the tax code changes, etc.

That's how I feel. Thanks whoever posted it.

I am hoping that by sharing ideas through this thread all of us will learn a bit more about what is going on because it's important.

Remember, Wall Street isn't just the stock exchange in NYC or the people working in offices around it. It's made up of companies from all over America that have grown enormous, callous and greedy. Many employ lobbyists to influence Washington in ways that don't always help us, the everyday people. Some companies do not pay their fair share of taxes and some of their executives do not either. I'd like to see that change.

Corporate excesses have been talked about but nothing's been actually done to correct anything because our lawmakers are afraid of losing donations. Think about the dangerous banking practices that almost threw us into a major depression, so far there have been no regulations to protect us from another event like that. I'm Republican, but frankly, I'm grateful Obama is talking about reforms because my party isn't willing to push any. It's not class warfare, it's common sense.

Lots of folks on Wall Street and in finance are also losing their jobs right now as things continue to go south. I know people who tell me scary stories about what's happening in their firms. We need to be paying attention and educate ourselves about these issues.

This is not my truth either. I have seen too many people who truly sacrifice themselves for others to believe that 100% of people don't care. In fact, I don't even believe that 100% of the top 1% don't care. Of course there are those at all income levels who are selfish and uncaring, but there are also those at all income levels who are generous and compassionate and fair.

So we can't be unhappy with the current system? We can't want better for future generations as well as ourselves? We can't ask that corps pay taxes? That jobs remain or come back to the US from overseas? We aren't allowed to want better? We just have to maintain the status quo?

And, I would LOVE to liquidate my 401k.

Oh wait.

That already happened thanks to Wall St and the banking industry and all that stuff.

That wasn't Wall St's fault? It was all one bad hedge fund manager?

Please tell me who is responsible if Wall St has no role? If Wall St doesn't control these things, then why do we care how the stock market is doing and why does it matter if the Dow drops 2000 points in a day unless we own stock?

I really need an explanation on this, because everything I've read says it's Wall St and the Banking industry who caused this mess, even more so than the idiots who took out mortgages they couldn't afford.

So if not Wall St, who? Was it the banks who approved the 465k mortgage for a person making 35k? The broker who convinced that an adjustable rate mortgage with a giant balloon payment after 5 years would get them in that 465k house and they could refi before then "no problem"? The fraudulent loans that were approved? The people buying mortgages would have been able to sell to someone or foreclosures would have proceeded as normal. The system didn't implode solely because a few bad mortgages were written. If Wall St isn't culpable in this mess, why did congress feel it needed reform? Just as the banks and the people had THEIR role in all this, so did WALL ST.

And it is "OCCUPY WALL ST", not "Occupy Massapequa and your local Bank of America" because of all those things in that original quoted post... "because Wall St exists" as the FACE of the financial system of the US and Corporate America.

No problem when the god of the Republican party says it, but when the Democratic black guy does, it's class warfare and socialism.

Completely agree with you. I wasn't going to post in this thread either, since my views are clearly unpopular.

There is no such thing as personal accountability anymore. And when cr@p hits the fan, it's easier to blame Wall Street / corporations than accept responsibility for ourselves (individually & as a society).

Okay - you know what - let's blame me. *I* will take personal accountability for the fiscal crisis. I have no problem bearing the brunt of that blame. Okay? You can Tweet it and FB it .. whatever. Jeannie is responsible. Blame me.

Now that we know who to blame and can all agree on it.. let's move on to the BIG question...

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO TO FIX IT??

Maybe I should re-address my posts to make it clear that I don't CARE who is to blame. It's past, it's over, it's done. We can't get a re-do. BUT we can face forward and work on a solution.

The best, easiest and quickest solution - in my opinion (and that should be worth SOMETHING since I've now agreed to be the reason for the entire global economic crisis) - would be to make sure that there is fair taxation. That we re-focus our efforts on bringing jobs here. How about all large companies pay the same percent in taxes that middle America is expected to pay? And.. while we are at it.. how about we stop giving any kind of break to companies who outsource their entire work force because it's cheap labor? How about instead of focusing on how we can skim from the people who are already barely making it - we start looking at getting an equal effort from the folks whose salaries can actually MAKE a difference?
