we do not have nor will we ever have a purely capitalist system. IT DOES NOT WORK. that is why we don't have it.

I feel like people don't bother trying to absorb things. I feel like I am reading some politico rhetoric.

PAY SOME ******* TAXES.

it does not get any simpler.

I don't care about the dude making 1million dollars on WALL STREET

when I say Wall Street, I am not talking about the people who work there. I am talking about the institution. the companies that we buy in to that DON'T PAY TAXES,

DO NOT PAY TAXES. do you understand that? they make BILLIONS of dollars and DO NOT PAY TAXES.

even your average hollywood movie star pays taxes on his/her absurdly large pay check (or like Wesley Snipes, you spend time in jail)

we own stock in companies that are shipping jobs overseas...headless of the financial collapse that will signal here...so that they're dividends will be higher.

Wall Street and it's fake numbers and inflated bull **** has become more important that JOBS.

it is all cyclical.

I work for Coke. I make the soda. someone buys the soda with money earned FROM ANOTHER JOB, and the money goes to Coke to pay the salary, and Coke pays taxes to the govt to support our social systems.

if person B can't buy coke b/c they can't afford it, I will lose my job. and it coke doesn't pay taxes on its earnings, our social and political system turns to ****.

WE NEED JOBS. we don't NEED STOCKS.

JOBS.
JOBS.
JOBS.

if more corporations would stop worrying about what their stock holders earned and their margins and dividends, maybe they'd stick around to pay and AMERICAN WORKER to do some WORK.

we are so off balance it is not even funny. we have NO INDUSTRY. computers. GONE. customer service. GONE. fabrics. GONE. manufacturing. GONE. even half of our FARMING is gone. more than half. even our PORT SECURITY is outsourced.
WHAT
THE
EFF??????????????????????????

what do we have left.

a bunch of people sitting in offices selling stock in something that we can't afford to buy anymore.

it's over jonny. over. these corporations are LYING through their teeth. their earnings are out of control yet they can't earn less and do it here???? WHY? it's ********. we are going down.

Ophelia , do you ever wonder why all of our manufacturing and other industries are leaving, it is because we can't compete in the global economy because the cost to produces goods here is too high. Which I blame a large part on Unions. I know I am going to get flamed for that statement but it is true. The LIRR being a prime example with the article that was in Newsday with their araciac (sp?) rules and how it is costing $$$. There are alot of unions that promised many benefits that in the end they couldn't deliver on or is driving up the costs of the goods/services they deliver. So they corporations send the jobs overseas in order to produce products in a more cost effective manner.

And to add to this:

These companies OUTSOURCE all OUR jobs to other countries and then get all kinds of tax breaks and TAX PAYER FUNDED BAILOUTS so they can "remain in the US"

Everything we touch is outsourced. Our banking, customer service, human resources, tech support, manufacturing etc.. all outsourced to other countries. There are practically NO items left that can actually get stamped "MADE IN THE USA"

True. Why pay lots of money here to get something produced when you can get the same thing for less expense overseas. Not saying this is good, but its true.

Everytime he speaks he says how the "wealthy have to pay their fair share all the time". I heard him say in one speech, how many suits do you need? how much food can you eat in one day? When he told Joe the plumber we need to spread the wealth. How much money is enough.?To me those kinds of statements are pitting those who don't have against those who do.

Listen, I know this site is primarily a liberal viewpoint but I still enjoy the debates and the other boards for advice. I know I am never go to change your mind and you will probably not change mine. Being a Conservative does not make you a person with no empathy for those who struggle in life but it seems that being a liberal makes you loathe those who are successful.

There's a lot of scapegoating of the unions but I do agree it is a contributing factor. I don't agree it's the sole cause.

A lot also has to do with government regulations. Other countries don't have regulations to protect workers like we do here. They don't have to meet standards as far as chemical disposal or use. There isn't an expectation of getting benefits, sick time, vacation time etc.

yes, b/c it all boils down to MONEY. it's not satisfactory to make 6 billion dollars in earnings and pay workers HERE a decent wage. NO. they need to go overseas, pay people peanuts in India, and make 12 billion. oh, and then decide they don't want to pay taxes on it.

I do understand what you are saying and I believe that a lot of it goes back to what Matilde said the other day (which I love) in that we are embarrased to be lower-middle class. to be a working person. to have a modest home, a modest car, and earn a modest living...it's embarrasing to us.

I am also a person who thinks there should be union reform. I think long ago unions provided a TREMENDOUS service to the working people. without them, non union employees would not have nearly the rights and protectons that they have. but now, things must be revisted on ALL sides.

but honestly, we need to take the BIG FISH before we go after unions.

do you really think it's fair that Verizon made 12 billions dollars last year and does not have to pay tax on it? and when I say made, I mean in EARNINGS. PROFIT.

Exxon made I think over 30 billion dollars PROFIT. NO TAXES.

how is that REMOTELY fair? Exxon actually gets a federal tax break from OUR country b/c they are heavily taxed in NIGERIA. do you see that? another country gets to collect taxes from an American company and we let them write that off!!!! it is INSANITY.

Make the fat cats and the corps pay their fair share of taxes. Get rid of the tax shelters. Make lobbying politicians illegal.

We are the 99%. Not one of us here on this board are part of the 1%. If you think you're immune to the problems of today's economy, you have a rude awakening coming.

You or your DH could very quickly find yourself standing on the unemployment line unable to find a job. Any job. It's not as easy as flipping burgers if you're overqualified. You could very well end up being the one not able to pay your bills. Maybe you think you have great savings, but what if you go through all of those savings. Your 401k, 403b, pension, IRA, CD whatever could be obsolete tomorrow. Some people lost everything when the market collapsed. Learn from their experience and have some sympathy for others who are struggling.

ALL of us in the 99% are one bad break away from destitution. If you think otherwise, think again. We all should be worried. We should all be cautious. No matter how "good" your situation is today, it could be bad tomorrow. No career is recession proof. Not the police, fire, lawyer, doctor, educator............. all could be cut tomorrow and be unemployed.

ITA

Also I think the sweeping generalizations people are making are doing NOTHING BUT DIVIDING US

(not ALL CEO's worked hard, but some did to get where they did....not everyone who is unemployed is lazy, but some are)

it's not about one person paying their taxes.

it's about corporate greed. it is pervasive. and like a spreading cancer it is killing our country.

And this movement may very well be unorganized, but so are the starts of many protests and movements.

Like I said before, the 99% (us) are no longer represented, only the corporations and 1%ers are being represented. The interests of the common folk are no longer a concern of our politicians thanks to lobbyists for corporate America.

When will these corporations are forced to pay US taxes? What? They'll leave? Highly unlikely. Even if they pay taxes here, we're still their honeypot. They can't survive without the US market.

It's time for us to start demanding change. HOW to do that is the challenge. This movement may not be much, but it's something... and it's spreading

I don't know enough about import tariffs to engage in the debate but I would think it's because a US based company can get cheaper labor, eliminating their portion of:
Social Security taxes (6.2% up to the annual maximum)
Medicare taxes (1.45% of wages)
Federal unemployment taxes (FUTA)
State unemployment taxes (SUTA)
Healthcare responsibilities

Then they can ship it back (with lower import taxes that were successfully lobbied for) to the US citizen who will buy it because they need new clothes to interview for their a job because they were laid off when their company's industry was shipped overseas.

I don't understand this either. I went to an independent private elementary and high school, where most kids came from extremely wealthy families. I also didn't meet a conservative until I went to college. Almost every wealthy person I know is liberal, and therefore, along with most of the country, consistently voting against their own economic interests.

Wow, I just can't understand some of the comments on this thread. I don't know why I am STILL amazed at the lack of sensitivity. You would think I'd be used to it by now. And did somebody really mention actors' salaries? Really? So the mess we're in is because of the actors now? So let me see if I got this straight... according to some people on these boards, the sh!t we're in now is because of the actors, and the president, and the ones that are "milking" the system, but corporate greed has nothing to do with it? Psssst. You? Out of my head. Chat Icon

It was the reason I brought up "no taxation without representation" a while back. The difference this time is we're not under a monarchy, it's being done under the guise of capitalism.

Major change doesn't happen quietly or in a very organized fashion. Sometimes it takes a small, vocal group to get things rolling.

Wall Street IS the enemy.

This is one of the reasons our economy is in such trouble right now. This ignorant statement that so many bought into - so many that just don't understand how the financial system works. These same people were cheering when the gov't wouldn't bail out Lehman Bros and were being interviewed saying they got what they deserved - and, look what happened then. When will people learn? Probably never b/c they are too busy blaming everyone else.

And, no, I don't have sympathy for these protestors - not at all. My DH works on wall street and he would never have 5 min of the unlimited supply of time these people have to spend doing something that contributes absolutely nothing to society - b/c he is too busy working 24/7 Chat Icon

You can call me ignorant. I've been called worse so I don't care. But I know what I am and ignorant is certainly not on that list of things.

But I think you're blind. I don't need to go into a back and forth with you about it because the point of a debate is not to change the other side's mind - it's to make them understand. And you won't. If you can read this entire thread and not even see a little bit of what's really happening, me defending my 'ignorant statement' with facts won't do a thing.

I contribute to society. And I'm one who's lost almost everything.

Everything.

So there you go.

I couldn't agree with this more. It seems as a society we are becoming more and more obsessed with material things. Needing to have the things the celebrities have, keeping up with the Jones's etc. It is very sad.
