Re: Question about the Chicken Pox shot (especially for Dr.'s and moms of girls)

Posted by itsbabytime

This is something that is really bothering me now that I have a DD. I am going to ask my ped about this at the next visit but I am curious if anyone knows the answers.

Given that:

1. You can still get the chickenpox even though you have gotten the vaccine (I know kids that this has happened to even) and

2. the shot does not necessarily confer lifelong immunity.

Then, what is the story for our DD's when they are older and pg given that the chicken pox is really only dangerous for pg woman b/c it causes birth defects. Are our vaccinated DD's going to have to worry about contracting the chicken pox while they are pregnant and face the possibility of birth defects since they have only had the shot and not the disease?

I know that my DD needs to get this for school so I am trying to reconcile these things in my head.

Thank you.

I was in this boat while pregnant. I had gotten the chicken pox shot at 14 I believe, and I got pregnant with my first at 24. I didn't think anything of it, until I was exposed to chicken pox, and called up just to make sure I was immune. I was NOT.

After I had my first, I was told that I should wait to get my chicken pox shot until my son was 1. I got pregnant with my 2nd when my son was 8 months old. I ended up getting the shot after my 2nd was born, and am STILL not immune. For some reason, it is not taking with me.

When I was exposed with baby #1, I did go and get the shots that would help being that I was exposed to it.

They can have titers drawn in the future to test for immunity.
I gave it to my DD and plan to get it for DD2 as well.

GREAT question!!

I don't understand the necessity of a chicken pox vaccine. I think it's better to get the chicken pox than the vaccine.

Re: Question about the Chicken Pox shot (especially for Dr.'s and moms of girls)

I ask DH (a physician) this "1. You can still get the chickenpox even though you have gotten the vaccine (I know kids that this has happened to even) "

he tells me, you can get any disease you have gotten vaccine for, vaccine doesn't prevent it, it only lessens it

Still I delayed it at 12m, I will reconsider it again at 24m. DH isn't happy about that, and he can't justify to me the risk of the permanent damage or death from the vaccine are less than the risk of chicken pox permanent damage or death. We debated it for a while, and left it at that.

I'm with you on this, I live in the UK where you can't get this vaccine, and I don't see the point of it. I understand that the pox can be dangerous, that I get, but I also understand that you can get the chicken pox once you are vaccinated...that makes no sense to me.

You can also get the chicken pox more than once. . . I had them - it was a mild case so my doctor warned me that I can get them again.

My dr. told us that so many kids get it now that it is almost gone and the few that get it get it really bad.

I had 1 kid in my class that did not get it and was out for an entire month of 1 st grade due to it. She had it really bad.

We went back and forth on it and gave it to her. I don't know what I believe is right and wrong anymore when it comes to vaccines. Chat Icon

This happened to a friend of mine. She got it when she was little and then got another case of it in her 20s (she was a teacher at the time). I guess you just never know...

I had it twice. Both good cases, both times. Once when I was about 1 and when I was 23. Covered head to toe.

Well nothing in life is a guarantee. Even if your child does not get the shot she might not ever get chicken pox or and even if they get it she might not get immunity. I got chicken pox when I was 5 and I had no more than 5 spots and no fever. I have a friend who had a minor case like me who didn't get immunity. They told me that there was a very high probability that I would not be immune. My OB when he took blood to test my immunity said that if I was not immune that I should get the CP vaccine. Turns out I am immune and I was lucky but you just never know. But honestly by the time your DD is ready to get pregnant who knows what new medicines/vaccines etc will be available. When we were kids not everyone got CP anyway which is why I say nothing is a guarantee.

The benefits of the vaccine are:

1. My pediatrician says she no longer sees kids getting the chicken pox. Therefore, a child could grow into an adult without exposure. Chicken pox as an adult (male or female) can be a serious even deadly disease with pneumonia & hospitalization common. If you are pregnant, it can cause birth defects.

2. No shingles as an adult.

You can get chicken pox after the vaccine OR after a case of the chicken pox. That's why they test you when you are pregnant.

I'll have DS immunized because of reason #1.

As for lifelong immunity: people will probably need boosters.

Good question, but I also want to add that I had the chicken pox twice as a kid, so apparently having the virus doesn't always give you life-long immunity either. I got a mild case at three when my brother had it. I ran a fever for a couple of days and had a few pox. My mom assumed that would be it. Then when I was 13, I got it BAD!

Why not just delay the vaccine until you absolutely have to (for school)? I am a parent who spaces out and delays vaccines myself, and I find that my viewpoint about certain vaccines evolved a lot as my child got older. First, a slightly older child is stronger, with a more developed immune system and nervous system. I feel like their bodies are better equipped to handle the vaccines. Second, they are more able to TELL you if they don't feel right after a vaccine, something a baby just can't do.

I was wondering if that was the case in the UK - my DS got them from a girl in his class who was visiting family there (who had them).

Getting the actual chicken pox is supposed to provide higher immunity than the vaccine.

Well I personally didn't want to give DS the chicken pox vaccine. I had the chicken pox as a child and I just feel like that way you are more likely to have lifelong immunity (although it's not a guaranty of course, but a better chance of immunity by HAVING chicken pox than by getting the vaccine).

HOWEVER, two things made me reconsider.

First - DH has never had the chicken pox. As an adult, if he were to get chicken pox it would be a very serious thing.

Second - we want to have more children (or at least 1 more). For a newborn or infant to get chicken pox, it can be very dangerous as well.

So we gave the vaccine to DS. Mainly to protect my DH!

I was on the fence about this vaccine too. Then my ped made a good arguement to me about if DD got it, she could scratch and develop secondary staff infections from scratching. That convinced me, esp since it was mandatory anyway down the line for school.

I had the chicken pox and also have vaccinated both my daughters against chicken pox.

It is most dangerous to adults and pregnant women, true, but if all kids get vaccinated, then their pregnant non-immune teachers/aunts/etc. will have a __much__ lower risk. I hope by vaccinating my daughters I will protect another baby, and I hope that when my daughters are of childbearing age, other moms will do the same to protect my grandchilren!!!

Re: Question about the Chicken Pox shot (especially for Dr.'s and moms of girls)

So is the reason why kids aren't getting chicken pox anymore because they have a vaccine for it? I do not want my son vaccinated for this, I feel like it is unnecessary and yet MORE stuff to put in his body. I assume it is required for school, which i don't agree with, but it seems to be all or nothing based on what I have read on here, so I probably won't have a choice. Ridiculous.

If you aren't immune if you get the disease and not immune if you get the shot... what is the point? I'd rather DS get the disease.

BTW I got the pox as a senior in high school with no issue, ditto my friend who got it when he was 24.

just FYI newborns have mommies immunity and its very unlikely they can get chick pox before 1 year.

Also why doesn't your DH just get the vaccine to protect himself.
