Honestly, i think pre-k is a great way for children who haven't been exposed to day care or other structured settings to get used to the whole setting before they start K. Kindergarten is not like it used to be. They now want you to already know how to read and write and know sooo much more than when i went to K. I was the class mom in my older DD's K class and you could see the difference in the kids who had pre-k or day care setting before to the ones who K was their first formal structured setting.
I agree with this 100%. I didn't send my DS to preschool for an education. Next yr he will go to pre-k and, again, has nothing to do with learning. He is a smart kid and already knew all his letters, numbers etc. b/f even starting the 3 yr old program. Now, he already knows the basics for K. Also, I am a SAHM so I don't need the "babysitter" for my child. Honestly, I found school to be more of a pain to our schedules! I did it for him - b/c I truly feel it is in his best interest and a huge disadvantage to not send him.
EVERYONE in our area sends their children to nursery and pre-k. Most even start at 2. It's important for their socialization but, also to learn and become familiar with the structure of the classroom, following directions, learning independance, building confidence in that setting etc. I saw a huge change in my son after he started nursery school. And, looking at him compared to some friends that were a few months younger than him and missed the cut-off so won't start until this year the difference was HUGE. you would have thought he was 2 yrs old than them rather than 2 mos if you saw them interacting. I'm sure it does depend to large extent on the particular child but, I would say 90% of the time your child will be at a disadvantage in today's world in the tri-state area at least if they start school at K.

DS's daycare takes them until age 5. i plan to leave DS in daycare until kindergarten. mostly because i'm a FTWM and i need him there the full day.
I think our day care has a pre K program. So they do the pre K program for however many hours that is, and the rest of the day is daycare.

Re: Has/will anyone NOT send DC to pre k?
I'm on the fence about it, but I also have some time to decide - DS is 10 months.
However, I am leaning more towards no. I started with just kindergarten and not knowing english. I adapted fine.
Like pp said - they have 12 years of schooling ahead of them. Why rush it?
Also, I have a friend who teaches kindergarten (parents request her class before their children are even old enough to be registered) and she says pre-k is not necessary. She has to teach most things over to the pre-k kids, so whats the point?
