Question about hospital pre-authorization
OK, this is probably a dumb question but I have, thankfully, never had to go to the hospital for myself. I received a pre-authorization letter today from my insurance company. My doctor's office must have done the paperwork for me which is nice.
My question is, the letter says that I am authorized for a C section and two day stay. Am I authorized for a vaginal delivery too? Do they authorize you for the more expensive option so if you deliver vaginally you are covered as opposed to authorizing for a vaginal delivery and then you need a C section and are not pre-approved?

Re: Question about hospital pre-authorization
Hmmm .. I'm glad I saw this post.
I got a letter but it said I'm pre authorized for a vaginal delivery and 2 day stay.
I'm pregnant with twins, I've been wondering what happens if I need a section.
I see my Dr on Wednesday I will ask then.

Re: Question about hospital pre-authorization
Mine also said I'm pre-authorized for a vaginal delivery. It didn't mention a c. I just assumed that is something they don't anticipate happening but I don't know why I assumed that. I'm going to call my insurance company. Thanks for pointing this out.

Re: Question about hospital pre-authorization
I don't think it matters. I think the preauthorization letters are just to cover your doctors. When I went into the hospital with preterm contractions I had to re-fill out the admitting paperwork anyway and they resent authorization letters to tell me if my stay was approved or not. If anything bring it to your doctor at your next appointment and ask.

Re: Question about hospital pre-authorization
Word of caution.... keep those letters!
My insurance sent me that letter After I delivered, they tried to charge me a $200 fee saying I was never preauthorized for admission.
What a NIGHTMARE that was!
wording of the letter :
You informed us of your pregnancy, but never advised us that you would in fact, at some point be admitted in to the hospital for delivery.

Seriously?! That is just ridiculous. Did they think you were going to have the baby on the side of the road? Were you authorized for that? Unbelievable!
