Parents of 4.5 - 5.5 year olds or btdt's
What is your childs "currency" as Dr Phil calls it. In other words what punishment works for your DS/DD? We have made the switch from time out to time in his room and toy taken for the day or lose TV, I still find him getting in trouble for the same things over and over. Especially being overly rough with his little sister (DD is 1) not very aggressive, but he hugs her and knocks her down stuff like that. Jumping on the furniture. Not listening. Etc. What works for your DC of this age?

Re: Parents of 4.5 - 5.5 year olds or btdt's
I had an issue with this a few weeks ago. He didn't seem to care what I took away and for how long, if it was a long period of time. So 2 weeks ago, on a Saturday he was being super bratty and fresh. DH put him in his room and every time he shouted, was fresh or slammed his door he received an extra 5 minutes added to his time out in his room. Well he was in his room for 45 minutes. Since then he has been better. He is still getting punished for the same things just not as often. Now, if I send him to his room and he gives me a hard time going up I count to 3 and if he is not in his room by 3 he gets another 5 minutes and I just continue . Then the timer goes on when he is in his room. If has been in his room. 2 or 3 times I take away electronics for that day if he didn't play anything or I'd he already played ( he is only aloud one electronic activety a day for a set amount of time) then it gets taken away the next day. For some reason this seems to be more effective than taking it away for a long time.
He also turned 5 in April. I also notice I yell a lot less by doing this.

Early bedtime works over here, she hates it. We call it baby bedtime for baby behavior.

Being sent to her room. DD has stuffed animals and books in her room, but she doesn't want to be away from everyone else.
At 4.5, with both DC, they really had no "currency". Whatever punishment we came up with, they would see our hand and raise it. If we took away a toy, they would volunteer ALL their toys. If we have a 4 minute TO, they would stay there 30 minutes....
5yo seems to be the pivotal point for when they start to listen more, and respond better to currency.

Re: Parents of 4.5 - 5.5 year olds or btdt's
as you know I don't have a 4.4 or 5 year old, but what worked for some of my foster siblings was a reward chart. We would do stickers for good behavior and after the row was filled out they would get a reward. Always varied as my mom wasn't a big toy person.
Might want to give it a try.
And I don't know why you are asking these questions, R is PERRRRRRFECT!

Thanks for the input Katie. We started a "cooperation" sticker chart a few weeks ago and it does seem to work as incentive to cooperate or do what he is told. It doesn't work so well as a punishment or a consequence. He was very cooperative while we were away so he was supposed to get 4 stickers when we got home, but wjen we had to leave he threw and all out fit so I told him "its ok to be sad, but you have to stop screaming or you are going to get a sticker taken away." We got down to one sticker before he stopped. So this morning I told him to put his one sticker on the chart and how it was too bad he wasn't getting 4 stickers and he said that's ok, I only need 1 more to get a prize!!! Grrrrr! This child better be a lawyer or a hostage negotiator!
Eta: you should notebook this since E and R are the exact same child, just a few years apart, this is a glimpse into your future.
