UTI
Just found out yesterday that I have a very low bacterial count in my urine. According to my OB its not a full fledged UTI at this point, but that it has to be monitored with more frequent urine cultures to be sure that it doesnt grow. He also informed me that this bacteria is resistant to a number of antibiotics including penicillin. He did say that a sulphur-based antibiotic may be used for treatment if need be. I dont know how concerned I need to be at this point. I dont have any symptoms of an UTI at this point and it at this point its not even considered an UTI, but that I have this bacteria. I have been drinking about 80 ounces of water per day since I've been pregnant. I've been drinking straight unsweetened cranberry juice the last couple of days. I'm hoping all the water and cranberry juice will wash this bacteria out of my system. I'm worried what affect this bacteria and any possible UTI can have on my baby and me. Any advice from those who have dealt with UTIs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: UTI
I had two during my pregnancy (probably one that had never actually gone away!). When i first found out iwas in my second trimester and my ob prescribed me macrobid. From what i had heard it is completely safe to take while pregnant but I did not take it and iit came back a few weeks later. Long story short if it truly is a UTI take the medication because you do not want to end up with a kidney infection. I delivered DD almost 3 weeks ago and also got an infection from the catheter during delivery. Good Luck to you and feel well!

Re: UTI
Thanks for your response Crystan. I'm hoping that all the water and cranberry juice I'm drinking will do the trick and that it doesnt get to the point where I need to take an antibiotic. However, its good to know that if I need an antibiotic that macrobid is safe to take while pregnant. I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant and macrobid is suppose to be safe to take up until the last 2 -4 weeks of pregnancy. My OB told me that my particular bacteria is resistant to antibiotics with penicillin, but hopefully this one would be effective.

Re: UTI
I was also wondering if this bacteria could have come from the dental cleaning I had just a couple of days before my urine culture. Is it possible that the cleaning could have dislodged some bacteria from my mouth which passed into my blood stream and urine?
