DD never been sick so I am nervous

She is 2 and this is only her 2nd fever (first was Roseola). She has had a cold for the past week and a half and then yesterday had a fever of almost 103. Gave her tylenol and called the ped. He said to watch her and call if it gets worse. Fever gone, normal DD returns. Goes to bed fine, then at 3, I wake her b/c the fever is back and I want to give her more tylenol. Goes back to sleep no problem. Wakes with fever again at 8:30. Tylenol gets it down. Goes in for a nap at 1 and after 40 minutes wakes crying. I go in to comfort her,we rock a little, then put her back in the crib after 20 mins and she is sleeping again. She was very sweaty, but no fever. I feel so sad to see her like this since this is really the first time she is really sick. My question is - at what point do I get really worried? I called ped again this morning & he called in amoxicillan for her since he suspects an ear infection (not playing with her ears at all). I just feel so helpless.

I would give the amoxicillin and Motrin or Tylenol for fever. I would probably not start to worry unless the Tylenol/Motrin doesn't help bring the fever down, other symptoms develop, or if she's inconsolable. It's so sad when they're sick Hope your DD feels better soon!!

I would probably bring her to the ped. tomorrow to get her checked. Even if the dr prescribed amoxicillin I would still want to know what the amoxicilling is treating, if its a strong enough antibiotic or if its just viral.

Also, there is a place called PM Pediatrics, one in Syosset and one in Selden, that is wonderful for after hours and weekend care.

First off I remember DS first times with a high fever how scary it was (my DD hasn't had one yet). As long as the tylenol or motrin brings the fever down I wouldn't worry at all. I would only get concerned if either the fever wasn't coming down enough or, your DD was acting out of it or very lethargic - at that point I would call the ped again. If not, just give her plenty of liquids (very important) and make sure she gets her sleep and some good foods in her. Otherwise, I am sure she will be fine soon

One other thing, I wouldn't give her an antibiotic without the ped examining her first. The antibiotic will only be helpful if she has a bacterial infection and, 9/10 these things are viral. I'm actually really surprised unless there is a history or some other factors I don't know about that your ped would just prescribe an antibiotic without examining her first. I would wait until tomorrow on the anitbiotic - no need to give it to her unnecessarily.

Our ped. said to go to ER for fevers over 105. Lower than that, treat with Tylenol/Motrin (or both if high fever). DS runs a fever of 103-104 when he has an ear infection.
