Smoking related
DH and I haven't told anyone yet. We decided we will wait until our first appointment on Tuesday and then maybe tell our parents only.
My mother smokes and I have been on her for years to quit. I definitely will not allow her to hold the baby if she smells of smoke. I don't think she'll smoke aroud the baby but, knowing her she'd go smoke outside and not around a baby. This issue really concerns me.
Have any of you had to deal with a smoking parent? Did they quit once they found out you were PG? I am really hoping that she will quit once she finds out!

Re: Smoking related
Both my Mom and brother smoke and I spend a lot of time with them. They stopped smoking in their house (kitchen only when they did) when they found out I was pregnant. They both cut back a lot when I had the baby and they only smoke outside. They wear a certain jacket when they do, so they don't smell like smoke when they come back in. They leave the jacket by the back door. I make them wash their hands before they touch DS. I know I can't make them stop nor deprive them of seeing my DS but I make sure they don't smell like smoke when we are around. Febreze is good to have on hand. They spray the couches before we come over and the carpet. It hasn't been an issue yet. Once in a blue moon I will catch an odor of smoke on them and I let them know it..Good luck. It is a tough one...

Re: Smoking related
My mom smoked from 16 years old and was between 1 and 3 packs a day...we ended up moving into her rental apt but I wouldn't do it until she quit. She did but picked it up again several times. I would catch her sneaking around to smoke. She never did it around DC-once she left DS in the house alone to go smoke outside for 5 min!
After that incident we were going to move out so she did chantix and never smoked again.
She passed away 2 years later from cancer. If she didn't quit she probably would have missed another year or 2 with DS.
I hope your mom will be motivated to quit! My dad dying of lung cancer wasn't enough for my mom, but being able to be with her grandchild did the trick!

Re: Smoking related
My mother smokes, as do both of my brothers.
there's no way my mother would ever not smell of smoke. And I can't make her quit. she has to quit for herself.
I just don't go to her house too much when I'm pregnant. And I won't have the baby in her house either... bc it smells of smoke.
she probably won't smoke around the baby... but I'm sure she will smoke elsewhere and then be around the baby sometimes. IDK... I don't think there's much I can to about that. I'm more concerned with her house and her actually smoking around the baby... than with her being around the baby after smoking.

Re: Smoking related
My DH smokes and swears to me he is going to quit cold turkey when my arrive in June. I don't want him holding them if he smells like smoke. I also want my husband around for his kids as they grow older. It needs to stop!!

Re: Smoking related
My MIL smokes and I was only worried about second hand smoke, although I'm pretty sure she won't try to smoke around the baby. Then I read an article recently about third hand smoke (which I had never heard about) and how it can cause asthma in babies.
Unfortunately I don't remember where I read the other article so I can't link to that one but I found this one that explains about the dangers of third hand smoke. Third hand smoke

Re: Smoking related
Yes! DH and I were just discussing this yesterday. My Dad is a big time smoker. Once we got PG I told him he has to smoke outside or in his bedroom. But it doesn't help too much because when I'm not there he still smokes in the house. You can smell the smoke before even walking in the house, that's how bad it is.
My SIL kept certain things at my Dad's for my niece and everything smelled like smoke. Since I know no matter what my Dad won't change his ways (as seen with my niece), we're not going to keep any of the baby's items at his house and we're going to have a separate set of clothes for when we go there I think. I come home reeking of smoke - my coat, clothes, even my hair. I don't wany my baby to smell like smoke.

My BFF makes her MIL change her shirt after smoking before she can hold her DD. Third hand smoke is real and scary. I never thought about her hair though.

Re: Smoking related
My MIL smokes, and although I know she will not smoke around the baby (she doesn't even smoke in her own home), I sometimes worry about the smell of smoke on her.
However, I try to be rational about this. When my brother and I were little, my parents had an apt in my grandparents house for a while, and my grandfather & uncle were heavy smokers. I know they smoked in front of me and my brother (but it was the 80's, and nobody thought twice about it). My brother and I are both fine, asthma and allergy free.
Ironically, my sister, who was born years later, and never around smokers HAS asthma...go figure.

Re: Smoking related
Both my parents and my IL' smoke. I made it a point to tell them they couldnt hold the baby until they washed their hands, but the smoke was still ingrained in their clothes and their hair! dont count on her quitting!
