Dealbreakers...

If you saw a house and liked everything about it except the condition of the neighbors house (messy yard, junk layiing around, unkept).. is that a dealbreaker to you? Curious as to your responses..

Yes, it was. There was a house we were interested in, but they had chickens, and my mom brought attention to me that it might bring rats into the yard.

Plus, they had a couple of old cars in their yard.

I thought I could get past it, but when the seller refused our offer, I was kind of glad.

no, because neighbors can change at anytime for better or worse. If the entire block was a wreck I might be concerned.

Our neighborhood has some seasonal residents and while their homes are not 100% tidy year-round, they make great neighbors. Its very quiet & private in my yard because they are rarely here.

Yeah, we passed on a house in part because of the neighbors. We live in the same neighborhood and every time I pass that house with their 6 cars all over the place I feel pretty good. Otherwise, I would always be on the phone with the HOA.

Yes, it is. We did not bid on a beautiful home because of what the neighbor's house looked like. Sad, but a total deal breaker for us!

yes, you don't want to have the nicest house on the block. The nicer homes could bring your value up. Same with the crappier homes. They can bring the values down.

totally and completely a deal breaker.

SIL moved after living in her house for one year bc her nextdoor neighbor was a mess and horrible. She was so annoyed and couldn't deal with looking at the garbage in their backyard, and front yard etc. Two years after selling the new homeowners are moving. She doesnt know for sure. but she thinks its has to do with the neighbors.

Yes. But there is sometimes a PLUS side.

There was a ran down house a few blocks from my house. I mean really really bad. Some boarded windows. Stuff all over the yard (left over drywall pieces, etc...), an above the group pool with a deck that was a mosquito breading area. Everytime I would pass the house while on a stroller ride with DS, I would feel SOOOO bad for the neighbors.

After a few years, I am sure they must have had complaints and the had to clean up all the crapola they had all over their front yard.

They even ripped/removed the liner of the destroyed pool in the backyard. It was mosquito infected.

Well, the house burned down. They had all their furniture in the backyard.

And guess what... they finally after MONTHS that it was boarded up because of the fire removed the house. They buldozered the whole thing, the house, the pool. They did not have insurance either.

I am sure the neighbors are finally enjoying their property.

I wouldn't buy a house like that. It is my experience that the neighbors you wish would move are the ones who stay forever......with a beagle....that howls outside your bedroom window....all the time.
You're talking about quality of life and if that stuff annoys you now it will only get worse as time goes by.
