Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

This is an ongoing debate between DH and I!

DH and his family are from Eastern Europe. In their household, it is a shoes off policy and they provide guests with slippers.

It doesn't matter to me whether people take their shoes off or keep them on when visiting, although perhaps it will once we have a crawling little one.

However, DH is adamant that people take their shoes off. I think it could be construed as rude to ask guests to take their shoes off. He even asks that my parents wipe the dog's feet when they bring their dog over. He says everyone where he's from does that.

Our compromise was this: family and close friends are asked to take their shoes off. When we have guests, they can leave their shoes on, but we wash the floor immediately the next day.

My biggest problem is where the shoes are stored though. As soon as you walk in the door, DH's parents have an area where shoes go. I'm a little compulsive, so seeing the shoes off and thrown in the foyer really annoys me. I've been trying to find a shelf or ottoman where I can store the shoes b/c it really upsets me to see them out and not hidden in a closet!

My home is however you are most comfortable, just as long as you're not tracking mud through the house. Otherwise, be comfortable.

DH and I are almost always in just socks or barefoot in the house, but that's just because that is how we are comfortable.

Off. If a stranger (like a delivery guy or if someone is coming for an estimate) I don't ask them, but my family and friends know to take them off. It's the dirt, and also the germs. Think of all the nasty things you step on during the day.

We have tiles on the ground level, so usually we let people keep their shoes on unless its nasty outside--then we ask people take them off as they come in.

DH and I take our shoes off when we walk into our house. I would prefer if other people took theirs off too but I never ask them to.

I've always been a whatever you're comfortable with person for shoes but I think once the baby comes we're switching to shoes off to keep less dirt out of the house.

We will take our's off if the weather is bad but I will never ask guests to remove their shoes. I would not want to take my shoes off in someone else's home.

Never had "rules" but we tend to take our shoes off and it seems especially with the way the weather has been that most people take off their muddy shoes anyway.

Same.

I hate wearing shoes--I would walk around barefoot outside if it wasn't gross (or cold!!)

Shoes off! I finally put a sign on the front door after my in laws tracked snow through my house. I don' care if people think it's rude. They are not the ones cleaning my floors.

We prefer that people take off their shoes, especially in bad weather or if they are wearing crazy heels.

We don't have a rule here but DH and I NEVER wear shoes in the apt. They come off the second we walk in. We also rarely have guests so I guess it's a shoes off policy but it's based on our own comfort and not any policy we have.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

yes, in my culture filipino it's the norm to take off your shoes-we leave them in the hallway at the entrance.

but i have let people wear their shoes if they weren't comfortable taking them off. i just want people to be comfy in my home.

It's very common in asian households to have a 'no shoe' policy.

I would imagine that families with babies may also have this policy just to keep the floor clean for crawling little ones.

In my household, it's also 'no shoes' and it's quite obvious because we have a large shoe shelf in our foyer which is signal for everyone entering to take off their shoes. ;)

Don't be afraid to ask your guests to take their shoes off, it's your house, your rules.

Shoes off, no exceptions to the rule!
Family & friends know this & they pretty much have the same rule too. I provide slippers & socks if need be but mostly I bring along my slippers everywhere I go. Its my biggest pet peeve.

No shoes allowed......unless it's a "party" but the people there know how I feel and take them off anyway.

Same here. I have white floors and light carpet. It's so hard to keep it clean if people wear shoes! I do have an 80 and over rule though. If you are over 80 you don't have to remove your shoes LOL, that's for my dadChat Icon

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

We don't have a policy. If people wear snow boots, they'll take them off. I did forbid DH to wear his work boots through the house because he left a trail of dirt one morning. I was able to trace his steps in every room Chat Icon

Shoes off for us since we live in a co-op & the entire place is DC's area to crawl & play. If we had a house with different floors, I might have different rules.

we have carpets throughout the apartment and we dont mind people wearing their shoes inside. unless it's snowing or snow can be tracked into the house, we dont ask or take off our shoes.
