Moms who are Bfeeding?

Do you drink coffee? I'm pregnant with dc #2. I drink a cup every a.m. I do remember drinking a cup in the a.m when I was nursing dd and looking back, I'm wondering if that's why she never slept during the day??? Chat Icon

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

I don't, but I never did when I was pregnant either. But that's just me bc I'm overly cautious lol. Every doctor I've ever talked to about it says one cup is absolutely fine for pregnancy AND BFing. I learned that after you drink a caffeinated beverage, the caffeine content in your breast milk is at its peak one hour later. So if I do have a cup or coffee or soda or something, I try to plan it either right after a feeding or hours before. HTH!

I didnt in the beginning, and then I started to drink a cup in the morning and paid attention to if it effected her or not.

I also drank it right after BFing so it wasn't like I would drink and then give it to her. It never bothered her so I stopped keeping track!

This was me with dd. Plus, I wouldn't be able to get through the day without my 1 cup. I was so terribly sleep deprived. Hoping its not like that again!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

No coffee here. On the random chances I do drink coffee, it's decaf.

FWIW, once Dunkin must have made a mistake because my DD was awake for 5hours after I drank it, when she was 6weeks old! So after that, I'm very cautious!

The nurses at the hospital said I can have one cup. I've had it here and there, but usually make decaf in the am. I haven't noticed a difference in DD either way.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

I do, one large cup in the morning. My cup of coffee each morning makes me very happy (and awake). I do try and limit it to only one though and DS is a great sleeper (now, not always!)

My friend also EBF and once she stopped coffee her baby napped better. Maybe test it out and see what happens.

I drank two cups of tea and a cappuccino yesterday and I also pretty much EBF. Typically though, I'll have one cup of tea or two tops in a day.

I didn't know it was supposed to be bad. Chat Icon Anyway, he's great and sleeps well too.

I have drank one cup and occasionally two cups and DS sleeps just fine.

The midwife told me that the breasts are better filters than the placenta.

No but that's because I don't like the taste of coffee.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

I have been unsure of this also. I have had coffee though and I haven't really noticed a difference. I heard it depends on the person...if you drank caffeine while pg then the baby is used to it (or so I heard)

I drink 1 cup every so often when I really need it.

I drink about 2 cups/day. DD is a vary good sleeper, she still takes 2 naps a day and sleeps from 8 to 8. I think it just depends on your LO.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

i did, but had to ease back into it after no caffeine for 9 months. 1 strong cup would make me dizzy! had to stick to the weak stuff for a while.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

Yes I do. They stave off migraines for me as well. For awhile, she was super fussy so I changed to decaf, but it turned out to be a milk allergy and had nothing to do with caffeine so I started drinking caffeinated again. That was when she was 2 months old. She is now 10 months old and no issues.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

I drink a ton. I know I shouldn't but I can't help it. DD still naps and sleeps on average 12 hours at night, so it's obviously not affecting her.

Yes, I drink it. I need my cup in the AM, with a 2 1/2 yr old and an almost 6 week old, I can't go with it.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

I didn't, but that's b/c I don't like coffee. I'd see how your DC reacts to it. Some babies are more sensitive to caffeine than others.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

With my first 2 I was able to (but kept it to only 1 cup). With my 3rd- no way. It made him CRAZY the first few months.

Now at 6 months he can handle it if I have 1 cup.

Re: Moms who are Bfeeding?

Yes... I have a cup right before DD's first feeding and gulp water (I have about 24 oz) between the first and second feeding. I haven't seen an issue with DD or with supply. But I'd lay off the double expresso if I were you.

This is what I'd do never had any issues with DS sleeping. Sometimes I'd even have a second cup (if DH made a pot that day) during his nap and still had no issues.
