You have to at least know about this book! Your Self-Confident Baby
Your Self-Confident Baby: How to Encourage Your Child's Natural Abilities from the Very Start by Magda Gerber
pre-coffee this morning, I did some random reading online, on another forum, I ran to a SAHM who says she doesn't want her baby to watch TV at all till they start school. So of course she's bashed from all sides, how is that possible, etc? etc? Then she says her kids play on their own for hours at a time, up to 3 hours. From age of 6m they were doing it at 30 min intervals, from 1y 1 hour intervals. I was like wow! DS used to do 30 min, but that when he stayed in one place. I very naively assumed older babies need to be entertained all the time.
She was generous to explain that they weren't born this way, she followed the REI method by Magda Gerber. A lot of people say "oh my baby does this and than" but noone ever explained to me how those babies learn to be that way.
So I rushed to get kindle on my android, and rushed to download the book. I started reading it as soon as ds went down for nap, and it all sounds like very sound advice. Nothing radical. Makes me feel like an idiot buying all the toys I have and vow not to buy much more. In principle keep it simple, safe, secure, and don't interfere in your child's explorations.
I was really curious about his. DS was always pretty independent, but since he started moving more, or wanting to move more. He will not play by himself if I'm in the room anymore. He will army crawl to me and all he wants is to hold my hands and pull me where he wants to go. (He's only cruising for now, and I'm his walker he's very strong, he picks up and turns over push toys, we have yet to find one that isn't too slippery and heavy enough to be safe)
I've contemplated getting him a walker, but he just screams when we put him in one at my parents. I'm just confused on how best to handle this. I know in my gut, that me being his walker is not right, I get nothing done when he's awake. I just couldn't see what else I could do, without limiting his freedom and exploration.
Just thought I'd pass it on, it seems like a very worth read.

I was eyeing this book before DS was born. I may pick it up this weekend because DS sounds like yours in that since he started moving more, he will not play by himself if I'm in the room anymore. He'll crawl to me & expect that I play with him.

*update*
I love this book, I love this parenting philosophy. It has changed our lives! I'm not a 100% convert but adapting some of the approach has just made huge impact.
Next step Baby Discipline, I follow this blog, and here is a great article on it, give you some insight into the philosophy:
http://www.janetlansbury.com/2011/01/baby-discipline-person-to-person/
DS threw his first tantrum at 8m. arched back, threw himself on the floor and arms and legs kicking about. We thought we were in a nightmare, every diaper, every bath, it was hell.
So much has changed, we are so much calmer, smarter, happier, safer.

Just a note: A lot of the focus in this book is on infants, the examples and research is more about them anyway. Its not so much about toddlers.

Thank you! I got this book when you originally posted about it. I started implementing some of the things. It's been working great. Thanks again for recommendation.

Does that mean the methods in this book really only start in infancy? Is it worth getting if you want to follow the approach for a toddler? Thanks!

I guess it never too late, I'm sure you can apply a lot of the principles. But the books does not specially speak to babies who are pasted walking and talking and potty trained.
The book starts really at 3m, because before 2m babies do not need toys according to the philosophy, and should spend time observing and exploring their own hands. The focus seems to be physical, mental, and social milestones, how it develops from play, for children who cannot verbalize. The last part gives a little about tantrums and potty training.
There is a great blog I read all the time, http://www.janetlansbury.com/ , the author answers questions on her forum and might have tons of free advice for you, and may direct you to other literature that uses this method.
