Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?

Did you check that new High School that just opened on Metropolitan Avenue? I don't know the name, but it just opened this year.

I am a guidance counselor. Unfortunately unless he applied (which he didn't in this case) the only school he is entitled to a seat is his local zone school. I can tell you what that is tomorrow when I get to work based on the address (if you don't know which one it is already). Feel free to FM me .

Some areas of Queens have "No zone" and in that case they usually assign students to the "Campus" of their former zone. For example Springfield Gardens is "closed" but they have a number of "small academies" housed in the school building that students from the area usually get placed in if they do not get into another school.

ETA: Another Catholic school might admit him...When I was younger I know kids who got kicked out of one catholic school and went to another.

Also if his local zone is undesirable and another catholic school will not admit him Whitestone Academy is an option.

True. Jill, I wrote to you on LIW. All kids apply now to schools, so they dont HAVE to go to their zoned school, but since he was already at Catholic school, it might be different. But, I'm opretty sure he can apply for a transfer after this year. So if he gets stuck at Grover Cleveland, he can transfer next year! Good luck and Im sorry!!

You can appy ONLY as an 8th grader or as a 9th grader.

IF he is in the 9th grade you should contact your District office bc the deadline is DEC 3RD (this friday)...so call them ASAP.

I didn't write that part... the quoting is off here. the part about applying and not having to go to the zone school..that was someone else.

But your information on when you can apply is good to know....
When I was applying I was in 8th grade about to go into 9th. My brother did successfully apply later on and he did somehow get in... it was around the 11th grade. IDK how he did it... it's even possible he may have lied about his address?? I really don't know... or maybe he got into a special program. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

For public, I would choose Forest Hills first, then Francis Lewis, then John Bowne. I knew people who had some pretty bad experiences at Bowne, but I assume it all depends on what crowd you're in etc.

I believe you have to be zoned for these schools you can't just pick where you want to go. what HS is he zoned for?

Christ the king is a catholic school and Cardozo ( unless you are zoned) is hard to get into

This wasn't exactly the case with me. I applied to Forest Hills and didn't get in. Not many were getting into that school because it's just about overcrowded. So if you don't get into a school then you would have to go to your zoned school or a catholic school. A lot of people don't get into the public school they apply to... usually you are applying to the FEW decent schools left and thus your chances are very limited. A ton of friends of mine couldn't get into FH either... we all ended up having to go to either Franklin K Lane or a cat
holic school.

It has changed a lot. I teach 8th grade in NYC so I see it first hand. Every kid has to apply to schools- some dont even have zoned schools where I teacher because they closed down or other reasons. The rest of my kids are mostly zoned to Grover Cleveland. They put like 3-12 schools on their list, so if they dont get FH, they get something else. A lot of my kids dont want to go to CLeveland, so they go to Manhattan or somewhere else. It's different now...Might be different for him since he has to transfer.

It is different now. Every student can apply to any high school..not just zoned. But like another poster stated, that it for 8th graders, and since he is transferring, it will be different.

If you "move" and can show proof of address and that is the zone you are entitled to a seat. Other than that you can only apply as an 8th or (first time) 9th grader. If you do not get in you go to your zone (or if you have no zone the school they assign you).

There is very little wiggle room in the DOE--especially for the better schools--Francis Lewis, Bayside, Cardozo. And some of the smaller academies (World Journalism Prep etc)

If you need more details feel free to ask, I do this for a living Chat Icon

I went to high school in Queens. Off the top of my head: Francis Lewis, Cardozo, Bayside.

I would stay away from Flushing and Bowne. GL!

i teach in queens and agree with this 100%. the only thing is... nyc high schools standard policy is you either go to your zoned hs, OR you have to apply to get into another school that is not your zoned school. mid-year you need to find out if they have any available seats and if they are willing to accept him. you cant just choose where ever you want to go and go there. he may have to wait until september to reapply and see if he gets accepted... they will also look at his record and his grades as well.
good luck

Trust me- we understand this. You have no idea how many times we've had to move him around and transfer in and out, getting left back. Chat Icon Thanks for all your help everyone. We're looking into all of your suggestions. If he's zoned for a school we don't feel comfortable sending him to, we're going to try the "moving" thing since we have a lot of family in Queens and we could always use their addresses.

Thanks again everyone! Chat Icon

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?

It all depends as to where he is zoned and where he gets accepted. I don't think it's as simple as just chosing what HS he wants to go to.

BTW I went to Bowne and yeap it was REALLY BAD when I went there eons ago but it's actually on the chancellor's list as one of the best schools. Scoring higher then Francis Lewis, Townsed Harris and Forest Hills.

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?

Lemme guess...was he kicked out of King? I went there a million years ago. What teacher did he do that to? I'm dying to know!

Anyway...my brother teaches at Francis Lewis HS. Excellent school, from what he tells me!

What about McClancy?

I THINK that's catholic

the ones that come to mind are John Adams and Franklin K. Lane.

They weren't the BEST schools, but maybe they have changed

it's catholic

my Dad went there

Re: *URGENT* Queens Public High School?

I am a teacher at Forest Hills and it is a good school- it is very crowded but i def recommend trying to get in there, I am constantly getting new students so there must be some way to get him in:) Good luck!
