When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

At DD's 2 mo appt. she was 11.02 lbs and the pediatrician said to continue to wake her up after no longer than 4 hours between daytime feedings.

She generally takes between 3-4ozs, sometimes 5 per feeding.

Not trying to rush things, just curious!

Thanks!

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

Strange, my DD just had her two mo. app. and she weighed in at 11.2 too but the doc said that she was good. I don't wake her at night for feeding. And during the day she normally wakes up before the 4 hour mark when she is hungry. She does sometimes take the occasional 5 hour nap in the early morning but I leave her. I think as long as she is getting the recommended oz. in the 24 hour period she is fine to sleep. Mine takes between 20-24 oz and that was ok with the doc since she is still gaining nicely.

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

Um, I never woke either of my kids to feed them. My kids didn't like schedules, they both ate when they were hungry. They also refuse to eat when they don't want to.

My Ped suggested at DD's 2 month appt that I was doing wrong by only feeding her 4 oz every 4-6 hours. I told them that my daughter is the boss, and when she wants to eat, she lets me know. I cannot unclamp her gums otherwise.

So, my advice is: Never wake a sleeping baby. And, feed the baby when they are hungry, however much they want.Chat Icon

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

I stopped when DS STTN for about a week or 2 straight.

I did it to make sure he was getting enough during the day to eat so that he wasnt hungry at night.

ETA: We could NOT feed on demand, DS would have been eating 24/7 it was just his nature as a NB, he hated a paci and wanted a bottle at all times. He would finish one bottle 6oz by 7 weeks and 1.5 hr later be crying for more. At one point he was eating 42oz in a 24 hour period. So we had to do scheduled feedings during the day time. But at night I NEVER woke him. From day 1 he was going 5-6 hours at night.

thanks! I thought it was a bit odd especially since DD has been sttn for 3 weeks now and just didn't seem hungry when I woke her unnaturally. I will let her lead from now on.Chat Icon

Good decision Holly. Never ever woke up Athan. He let me know - LOUD AND CLEAR - when he wanted to be fed and how much he wanted to eat. Like you said, just follow O's cue's. She'll let you know Chat Icon

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

We had some minor weight loss issues when DD was born and had to follow a strict schedule. But by the time she was a week or two and gained enough weight to make the ped happy we switched to on demand feeding.. it's the BEST.. everyone is much happier this way!

When you do this and she is napping, does she wake up and scream like she is being murdered and then you know it's feeding time?

After about a 2 weeks. DS was jaundiced and I was so nervous, I fed him any chance I got.

the first advice my mom ever gave me was NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY! and i never did. i figured if he could sleep through being hungry in the daytime then it'll help him sttn and skip feedings then too.

We stopped after a week or two!

ETA: DD was up to 4oz after a week but stayed at that level until she was 2 mos old. After 1 week, she was down to 5 feedings a day. By 5 weeks, she was STTN and down to 4 bottles so I think your DD would be OK if you let her sleep Chat Icon

I only woke DD until she regained her birthweight, about 2 weeks or so.

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

I've never woken DS for a feeding. I abide by the "never wake a sleeping baby" rule too! During the day he never naps more than 3 hours at a time and I think the longest he's gone between feedings is 5 hours. He's 8 weeks old.

Re: When did you stop waking your newborn for daytime feedings?

I NEVER WOKE my DD! I tried to with DD#1 and it didn't help and might have been the reason for her little sleeping int he beginning. DD#2 is not 8 weeks old and sleeping 10+ hours, is a "biggem" (as DH calls her) at over 12 lbs and happy all the time....so am I!
