locksmith questions
Thinking ahead...
Does a locksmith buy the locks or do you? Does that mean if he comes with a lock he can technically "have" a copy of your key, kwim?

We have had our locks re-keyed through a service and the guy had a machine that matched the master key. He then put in the new insert with the new key thing. I am sure there is a more technical name for it. He did not have a copy of our key - I watched him open the package with the initial lock and key mechanism and the other blank ones. We have also purchased our own lock and key set. See your other post....

If you get the Kwikset SmartKey locks, you can re-key the locks yourself whenever you want. I ordered my locks at the same time, so they were all keyed the same, but then I bought a new lock for my shed. I just got a SmartKey deadbolt, and rekeyed it to use the keys for the rest of the house. Took a whole 2 minutes or so, after it was installed.
