If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

For our wedding we had to show proof that we were baptized and made communion etc. DS will be baptized next month and I know every church is different, but do the godparents need to show paperwork of their sacraments?

For both my DC, the Godparents did not have to show any proof. They were baptised in the Episcopal church. Not sure if it's the same or different in other churches.

No, ours didn't require that. They both just had to take a baptism class.

Ours did, but only my BIL bc my sister is not catholic. So only the Catholic godparent had to show paper work, my sister was considered a 'witness'

Yes, our church requires proof of the sacrements for both godparents.

Re: If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

ours asked for proof, but it was easy since both of my siblings received all sacrements at the same church

Re: If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

my church made the godparents get a letter of eligibility from their current parish saying they were in good standing and received all their sacrements.

Re: If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

Anyone have it at St.Josephs in Babylon?

the reason I ask is b/c my SIL was baptized catholic, but confirmed Lutheran and I don't think my church will allow her to be a godparent because of that. Not that I want to lie to the church, but I think its rediculous that you have stipulations on who can be the godparent ( I don't want to pick someone just because) and if they don't have to show paperwork....... My brother was only baptized so he is the "witness" and you're only allowed one witness.

My sister was DS's godmother and she is Lutheran as am I. They still allowed her to be a godparent, but they labeled her a witness instead. OLPH said as long as one is catholic its fine.

the lady at the church told me that at least one of the godparents have to be confirmed Catholic which is not the case with my brother or SIL.

Ours didn't. They just asked if they were catholic and if that received all their sacraments.

Our didn't require paperwork. They just asked us if both were Catholic, b/c at least one needs to be.

Re: If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

DD was baptized at St. Patrick's Cathedral and they asked for no proof of sacraments. However, the godparents had to be registered at a church and have a form signed validating that.

Re: If your baby has been baptized...godparents and paperwork question???

the lady at the church suggested having a grandparent be the godparent....its hard enough balancing baby time with both sides let alone pick one to be a godparent. My DH is pretty ademant about having our siblings being the godparents regardless of what the church says...he said we can have a "stand in" but in our eyes our siblings are the godparents.

thats so odd about the grandparent b/c our church specifically said it had to be someone else other than a grandparent. Every church is different!

DD was baptized at St. Joseph's and yes, they will not allow you to have 2 non-confirmed Catholics as godparents. At least one has to be, and the other will be more of a witness.
