Well, we went to look at the new house yesterday and on our drive home noticed some little critters had joined us for the ride 
I suppose it's no great suprise considering the absolute squalor and filth these people were living in
Our plan is to rip apart every room, down to the studs. Would that eliminate the vestiges of the fleas, or do we actually have to treat the house? Anyone know?

They are probably in a carpet or some kind of upholstery. The fleas themselves are not the problem its the eggs. The eggs are so small, ripping aprt the house won't get rid of them. The eggs can also go dormant with the cold and come spring start to hatch. I would flea bomb the house while renovating.

When my sister first bought her house they were in the dirt under the house (she had no basement). They actually had to have the house sprayed twice to get rid of them.

I never dealt with it, but my first instinct would be to fog the house before ripping everything out and then once you are down to the studs maybe fog the house one or two more times .

You will probably have to treat the house b/c fleas can live off of microscopic bits. They can live in the floor boards, etc, and are very persistent.

I would absolutely treat now before you start work..I would also make sure there are no other sources on your property..ie. cats etc....if that's the case they would need to be treated "dipped" as well.

def treat the house.
you can also use Sevin... it's found in the gardening section ... amazing stuff that works! i used it indoors.
make sure you get all the bugs and the eggs... the eggs look like grains of salt. fleas can be very hard to get rid of!
be very careful when going back and forth to the old and new house. also if you have pets you should give them revolution or similiar...
