If it were me, I would fly or not go. But of it's going to use up a large part of your vacation money, I'd probably not go and wait until the twins are older and can enjoy it. I would either save that money for next year or use it to buy essentials that you really need.
Not a chunk of vacation money,( and if we really needed essentials we'd not be going on vacation) but we are getting an amazing once in a lifetime deal on hotel/admission we cant really pass up which is why we are going now vs when the girls get older which was original plan...and I'm sure they will enjoy it. Maybe not remember it, but thats what pictures are for
I'm more about the trip and dont want to pinch pennies and we kinda want to Roadtrip it for a few reasons, we like long trips...
BUT...I think in the end were gonna end up flying just for convienence sakes...
For those that said Jet blue/southwest...do you have to watch out for a fare drop? Been on their websites and the prices right now are not near $79 at all??

Tough call - totally see both sides of the coin - so I don't really have an answer. I'd tend to sway more toward driving because, while it is a longer time, it's less money, and you're in control. You can stop and go at your own pace.
The other thing to think about is that you said a January timeframe. Should we have some form of snow around that time, there may be some delays on the plane or on the airport. Whereas if you're driving, you can stop if the weather gets bad, or reschedule travel dates accordingly.
Just something else to consider.
I DID not think of this, VERY good thing to think of, Thanks. We cannot or wont be able to really move the dates since we'll have booked hotel already , hmmmm, I would think maybe plane would be easier though then driving in bad weather situation?
GREAT...something else to worry about. LOL ...
Seriously though,t hanks for that reminder.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
we just drove to Myrtle Beach with a 7 month old...15 hrs in the car and she was great!
We were going to fly but didn't and I'm so glad. We ahd sooo much stuff to bring (car seat, stroller, pack n play, etc) I don't know how we would have handle it all on a flight.
On another note, when I was younger we drove EVERYWHERE. we went on a vacation every year but my dad was afraid to fly. One year we drove in a two-door no air conditioner thunderbird cross country and we were fine! Your kids best memories of vacation will probably be the ride, it's half the fun!

Drive Drive Drive!
It's NOT only 2 hours. the flight is a few hours, getting to the airport, checking in, packing all the crap you need for the airport, for the flight, etc... getting the kids through security, getting off the plane, picking up luggage, etc.
I'm a little partial though
ITA...the thought of trucking the babies through an airport and the sheer amt of STUFF would make that decision forme. I think Noah will be fine..also you will probably spend about $300 each way in gas and tolls much less than the tickets would cost(I would assume)

I think this is why I like to drive, We always did as a kid and it reminds me of that probably.
Terrified of the amount of stuff we need to bring...the hotel doesnt have cribs or pack and plays so we need that and double stroller and ten tons of luggage.. lol

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
Our driving days are DONE and I only have 2 LOL. My "case" may be a bit different though. We go down every March to see my inlaws. We are going to ask them to pick up a cheap stroller (for DD, DS walks a lot now) and my dad's friends who live in my inlaws complex already offered a PNP. All we need to bring is car seats and hopefully 1 HUGE suitcase.
We drove this past March with 2 and we also had my dad with us (who has a house 20 mins. away from inlaws), so, we had an extra pair of hands. It wasn't "so" bad, but, we figured if we fly 1. We get an extra day (or 2) of vacation 2. It's a lot faster! 3. It may be a *bit* more money, but, like you said in your OP, gas, food, tolls, hotel..ALL adds up!

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
Well part of my answer depends on where you are staying?- If you are staying on property - I would say FLY FLY FLY - since disney has Magical Express - we just did that - with the 2 girls (I know 3 is MUCH harder)- with Magical express they pick you up at the airport AND transport your luggage so you DON"T see it after you drop it off at the airport in NY - and it "magically" appears in your room in disney. I would then ship a bag with stuff you need down to your hotel - we did that with a mid size uhaul box (full of diapers, wipes, take and toss cups and silverware, disposable placemats etc - which cost $18.68 ground with Fedex (took like 5 or 6 days). We did a grocery shop thru gardengrocer.com which is like peapod - for supplies in the room (breakfast, snacks, milk etc). You can probably do the same if you are NOT staying onsite - but not sure how it works b/c at disney bell services will hold your items and keep them cold if it arrives when you are not there - but I KNOW garden grocer does deliver to other hotels outside of WDW.
Honestly it is more expensive to fly - but it is quick -you are there in a few hours and can relax and enjoy your vacation much quicker- yes you have to lug a bunch of things with you - and wait for the flight etc - but driving could take a few days - and being in a car for several days with very cranky upset kids that age doesn't sound like a ton of fun - if it was just one child I might say drive - but 3 - 3 and under sounds pretty tough. The other thing is you have a reservation for a place in FL when you get there what if you end up making a lot of extra stops that you don't anticipate when you drive will that be okay with you all? Also how long are you staying? That is a long drive depending on how long you plan to stay when you arrive.
One question - I thought I read somewhere that you can only have one hand held infant per row? I could be totally wrong in that - I know it is one car seat per row - but I could be totally wrong with that - but you might want to check it out just in case.
How do the kids do on longer car rides - I would use that as my basis - if they don't well I would fly if they enjoy the long rides then I would consider driving- if you don't mind the long haul.

no worries
I have a mother who is OBSESSED with weather. Whenever we tell them we are doing something with the girls, the event could be 3 weeks aways and she'll tell me that she heard on the news that it may rain that day
Forget about whenever we tell them that we're planning something for the winter
If I don't get the snowstorm speech from my mom, my dad gives me the pothole/black ice speech
I mean, you're going to face obstacles no matter what. And you can't predict what the weather is going to be (unless you talk to my mother) To your point, you'd rather fly than drive in bad conditions.
I guess my main rationale for driving in January is that you are in control. You can stop and go as you please. And should there be weather issues, it's easier to adjust when driving than flying. Sometimes the delays are a couple of hours, sometimes they cancel flights for days. Whereas with driving, once the bad weather stops, the main roads are cleared almost immediately.
In regards to being locked into hotel dates, I know most of them have 24-48 hour policies. I also know you're going with friends, so that of course locks in schedules even further.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
I would 1000% fly. I would rather not go if it meant we had to drive. I cannot imagine a 20 hour drive with multiple young children.
Even our supposed short drives to Lancaster,PA and Ocean City, NJ with one young child was pretty miserable with traffic.

we are going to Disney this Dec. with the boys and we are driving. i think its the best thing honestly. we can do it at our own pace. i think it will be fun too.. stopping at SC for overnight.
we are not staying on disney grounds.. we have a timeshare in orlando. so now we have a car too.. which helps out tremendously!

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
We went through the same discussion. We decided to fly southwest. We had a great experience going down. The flight was perfect for the little man's nap. On the way back, there was a problem on the plane and we had to sit on the tarmac for awhile. Little man was screaming. He decided he wanted gummy bears and milk. Had the gummy bears but no milk and the flight attendant said they didn't either. Well the same bytch of a flight attendant stated to me that if I couldn't get him under control she was going to remove us from the flight. My husband told her that he would be fine once we got moving, which he was not one peep.
Just food for thought, make sure you do nap time flights.

..........and this is why we are not going! LOL
i can't figure out which is best with the kids. traveling with 1 or 2 kids and traveling iwth 3 is way different, you and DH are outnumbered!! my gut says to just fly, but then there is a huge part of me that thinks driving is better. So.....really i am no help!!

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?
With toddlers, I would fly.
I'm all for a road trip any time - and drove down to GA with my (older) kids. But my reasoning is I'd rather spend half a day in flying (including wait time at the gates) than an entire day of driving, possibly through bad weather.
I drove 17 hours in one day (no exaggeration) down & back to VA in one day. Why was it 17 hours? They shut down I-95 in BOTH directions for 3 hours- and it was summer. Cars were running out of gas on the highway, causing more traffic jams. We had a 4 year old in the car & she slept the entire way. Odds are 1 in 3 will be awake.
The only caveat to this would be if my kids are older - because a road trip would include stop offs in DC, SC, etc.
