custom made valances? Any recs?

I think that's what i'd need (maybe i'm even using the wrong term? i'm really clueless with window treatments and stuff like that).

Anyway. I have a big window in my dining room (about 104", i think), and a smaller one in my kitchen (about 74" i think), and i'd like to have valances made for both of them. The kind where it's like a wooden box with the padding and fabric over it. That's still called a valance, right?

Is there a place that sells them premade, or (i'm assuming) is it the type of thing that you have custom made (so you can pick out the size, fabric, etc)? Any recommendations for a place that makes these? Also, how do the prices on them run? Some that i came across online (though not really what i was looking for)were around $250ish. Is that about right, or way off?

I think what you're looking for is called a cornice...

I had balloon valances made - I bought the fabric at Fabric Mill - I think it was somewhere between $15 and $20/yard.

I had them made at Mill End shops in East Islip - BEAUTIFUL (I had to sign a waiver b/c I brought my own fabric). I think I paid $250/window. Totally worth it.

I priced out three places - Peggy's Custom Windows on Sunrise Hwy in Bay Shore, Mill End, and the Casual Home and Garden place on Rt 110.

Casual Home was the cheapest (I had them make my window seat cushion) but they kept giving me the run around - their seamstress was in Poland for like two months taking care of family problems... The store just didn't seem like they were doing any business so I was afraid to leave my fabric with them in case they went under. Needless to say - they're still there and my window seat cushion came out AWESOME. I wish I had went with them, I was just scared with the economy...

I highly, highly recommend you going custom but only if you're very sure you'll like it for a while. I would never pay that much for a window treatment unless I was keeping it for 10 + years.

I have used The Fabric Mill in Planview. The quality of the work is awesome and they were the lowest price I found BUT their customer service really blows. They have tons of fabrics to choose from.

I have also used this lady on Etsy. Again - great work and really cheap but it took 4 months and she kept giving me the run around. I would use her again, but I would go in with the expectation that it could take a really long time. She did a roman shade for DD's room. I was geting quotes for $600 and up and through her it was like $130. I sent her my own fabric.
