Question about Credit Cards???

Anyone successfully lower the interest rate on their credit card?

I just called up chase - I told them I had an offer from discover for a balance transfer on the rate of 6.00% APR for 12 months, they would not even check to see if there were any offers...

Anyway I can get them to do this without transferring my balance to a diff card??

Re: Question about Credit Cards???

yes, but before the economy tanked. funny you mention it bc DH actually called to try and do it on one of his cards yesterday and they were asking him for all this proof of hardship and stuff. he's like um, no hardship - your rate is just usurious.

Ah, no. I called to lower my APR and instead they lowered my credit limit - despite the fact that I have GREAT credit. Chat Icon

I am never calling them again. We are paying off our cards and that is IT.

Re: Question about Credit Cards???

if you have good credit you can get a balance transfer for 0% for about 12-15 months if you open a new CC. I've done this a few times in the past to pay off bigger bills.

Ive done this in the past also, transfer large balances to "special offer" cards... just make sure you pay the balance off before the 0% time period. some cards will charge you for the interest of the ENTIRE INITIAL BALANCE if you carry that balance beyond the specified period.... read the fine print!

and dont go opening TOO many cards because that doesnt look good either!

This is common practice. If you are asking for your interest rate to drop, you usually get transfered to the credit department. These are the people that determine if you are "credit worthy". A lot of times this triggers a manual review of your account and these people will lower your limit if they feel you can't handle the higher limit.

The best way to maintain your high credit limits are to NOT call and don't ask for line increases or interest rate decreases.

Re: Question about Credit Cards???

DH tried doing it a few months ago and they told him, "We can't do anything with the current balance today." He asked if he could do something tomorrow and the guy didn't find it too amusing. Chat Icon
