Ok, so let me get this straight.... if a person needs a device to help REMIND them to NOT leave your child in the car then there is something seriously flippin wrong here.Chat Icon People need to WAKE up! Ugh makes me angry!!!!!

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

I don't know. I used to feel the same way and then read an article in Parenting Magazine about this. Lack of sleep, a baby facing the other way and disaster can happen. I think about how exhausted I was when the babies were little and how lost I felt. Take me out of my routine and wow, it could have happened to me.

I know that it seems crazy but it can and does happen to even good parents. Chat Icon

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

I think it's awful of course but I did see the woman on Oprah who left her baby in the car by accident and she died and it was just so tragic. She was an administrator who was going to her first day at work and her husband was the one who normally took the kid to daycare. She went to daycare but they weren't open yet or something so she went to get donuts or something to bring to the school and went straight to the school by accident instead of going back to daycare and forgot her kid was in the car. It was awful and I just felt so aweful for her, I can't imagine the grief and the guilt. I don't think she was a bad parent all...

I agree. ESPECIALLY now that I'm 8 months pregnant, with 2 toddlers, while working, balancing childcare between myself, DH and a babysitter, AND dealing with buying a house and a mother whose sick. Half the time I don't know whether I'm coming or going anymore.

I cannot imagine the agony of living with that kind of mistake.Chat Icon

Normally I would agree with you both - but I can say that for myself, with all the stories we hear on the news about leaving babies in the car, I will never allow this to happen because it's on the forefront of my mind every single time I get in the car. When I get out of the car I go over where my kids are and when I'm supposed to see them next. I feel like this is a mistake I have a LOT of control over, more than any other mistake I could make.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

I think its a tragic story but I can see how it happens. Some people go on auto mode (I do) and when I drive to work I can't even remember most of the drive unless I was cut off or something bizarre happened. Dh gets annoyed at me because if its out of my routine I forgot a lot of times to do it.

I know if I had no sleep or very little sleep, its not in my normal routine and the baby was silent I can see how it could happen. Is it awful but i think it is tragic for the child and the parent who has to live with themselves because of it. I think the solution is that as a parent you need to build in a system of your own to make sure that everything and everyone is where they are supposed to be.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

How horrible - it is a tragic mistake. unfortunately, i can see thishappening. I would like to see a study if it happens more among working parents. As a wohm, I have a routine about dropping my kids off at daycare, parking my car, gettign on the train, and you are so in the mode, racing around, thinking about a million things, if i took a detour from that routine, would i make a tragic mistake? it is very easy to say "i could never do that" but you have no idea about what is going on in these people's lives. I am rushing around in the morning that sometimes i find myself looking in the rearview mirror to make sure i put dd's carseat in the car b/c i usually put her on the ground when i strap in ds - that scares me.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

my fear isn't so much leaving jessie in the car, but forgetting her at home.

twice it has almost happened.
i have all our stuff by the door. diaper bag, nebulizer, lunch bag...i put that in car, usually josh follows me while she is in pack and play.

i have found myself opening door, sitting josh in carseat and i know for a split second my head does forget about jessie...years of just getting josh in the car and driving off....

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

did anyone ever see that Oprah where the AP at a chool left her baby in the car and she died. She was not charged. She said her routine was difefernt that day bc it was the new school year and the kids started new daycares etc etc.

While I dont think that could ever happen to me, my dh was taking my dd to my moms in bayside from douglaston. He go to LaGuardia airport when he realized that my dd was in the back seat and had to turn back to bayside. Now I dont think he would have gotten as far as getting to the city and forgetting s e was there but I can see how a break in routine( this was not norm for dh to take her) can throw you off but not to teh point of forgetting the kid completely.

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

This is one of my bigges fears. There are times that I get work after I KNOW I just dropped DS off and I ALWAYS look back in the backseat to check and make sure he is NOT there. Its not so bad now that his seat is forward facing, but when it was rear facing I would always peek in the back window just to make sure he wasn't in there. If this was to ever happen to me I would NEVER forgive myself.

My prays go out to that family

A tragic mistake - and it's often when there is a change in routine with someone is dropping off the baby. As horrific as it is, I don't fault the parent because I can see how it could happen.

If the parent was off drinking in a bar or intentionally leaving the baby in the car to go shopping, then I would definitely cast blame.

Just horrible though. Truly tragic. I don't know how I could ever forgive myself.

I read the same article and it changed my opinion too.

Now, I'm not angry by this stories just so so so saddened by them.

ITA with LB. We check and double check that our kids are with us, even when we've strapped them in ourselves. It is still awful for the parents. I truly don't believe I could live with myself if this happened. Agonizing

Read this yesterday and you know what it can happened. I never bring DS to Daycare in the morning. I could totally see myself driving straight to work and not ever realizing DS was in the back. He is always so quiet and he is in a rear facing seat so I can't see him ever. One of the suggestions from the article was to bring a stuff animal and put it in the child seat. When you put DC in it you put the teddy bear in the front seat with you so you know that a baby is in the car seat.

I won't be naive and say that it won't ever happened to me, so I plan to now ride with a teddy bear. I am always stressed, always tired and I can totally see how this can happened. Take this as a wake up call and take preventive measures.

ITA with all of this. I'm sure all of the parents who this horrible tragedy has happened to have said "it could never happen to me". Chat Icon

My heart goes out to the families and the father... I don't know how I could live with myself after a mistake like that. I know how hard I am on myself if I allow my DC to tip over while sitting on the floor. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Another story where a baby is left in the car

I actually FORGOT to pick up my girls from the babysitter recently. It wasn't a day we usually bring them.

I left work, got all the way home, walked in the door, noted how quiet it was, saw DH sitting at the table and asked him, "Oh, are the girls napping?"

I've done this as well. I don't usually pick dd up except on Thurs. and I'll be more than half way home when I realize I have to pick her up.

I have absolutely no:

Patience
Compassion
Understanding
Lack of judgement

And much much more when I read these stories.

Not only because the child isn't the first thing they think about, but because they always seem to forget on the hottest days of the year.

How come we never hear about this happening in the winter? You never hear a child forgotten in winter and freezing in the car. what is it about the heat that makes parents forget they have children?????

EDITED out my knee jerk emotional response....

Of course you're entitled to your feelings, but to answer your questions:

Heat kills MUCH faster than cold. A car usually won't get cold enough during the day to actually kill a child (who is likely already bundled up) and the majority of *these* cases occur during the day.

MY feeling is that it's unfair to condemn these people as "vile"-though I respect the feelings of those who do. I just posted that I have "forgotten" my children- thankfully never in a car- and I can tell you that I am certainly not a monster. I'm actually a damned good and devoted mother.

But I can certainly understand how this has happend to parents.Chat Icon

For someone who claims to be so tolerant and supportive and always able to see the other side of things I find this post upsetting.

I have forgotten Logan in the car before.

Luckily the couple times I did it (and yes, it's happened more than once - hang me by my toenails) it was because I was out of my routine - DH was sick or away.

I did NOT forget that I had a child. Doesn't mean I love him any less.

Just means that on that occassion I had so much other stuff on my mind that in that split second I forgot.

Luckily in both cases I remembered quickly and it happened to be not scorching hot days.

The reason you hear about the hot days, btw, is because the death rate is hotter on those days, not because it doesn't happen the rest of the year.

But I guess since I'm so VILE, I shouldn't even have an opinion.

I'll let you go back to peeing in the woods with your kid now.
