Just wanted to answer a few questions about it --
The flatness can be caused by a few things. They say about 80% of babies with Plagiocephaly have another condition called Torticollis (same as a PP mentioned) which is a shortening or tightening of the neck muscles, pulling the head to one side. The baby then puts more pressure on that side, and the skull flattens on that side as it grows.
It can start inutero -- not enough room = squished skull! My sister and I have somewhat flat heads because of this. We're twins and I guess room was limited. Most kids bounce back and their heads round out within the first month, but for some kids it never rounds out and just gets worse.
Then there's the time spent on their backs. This was the main issue for DD. When she sleeps she usually doesnt turn her head, she sleeps with her head straight or a little to the right (hence the extra flattening on the right). Also, she LOATHED tummytime. Cried as soon as I flipped her over onto her belly. We worked at it but she still protested. The flatness was something that I was watching for months but the Ped kept telling me she was fine. Obv she wasnt. Best advice is to push tummytime often. The more time they spend on their bellies while theyre awake, the better!
As far as sleeping with the band -- Sophia really doesnt seem to mind it! Its VERY light, only weighs 6oz. I dont know that I'd be a happy camper sleeping with it, but she could care less
