Arsenic in childrens playsets -pressure treated wood!
So my boss is getting her deck done in her yard, and she was looking into both pressure treated wood and the timbertech material and her builder recommended she NOT use pressure treated bc it contains arsenic and the CPSC has been petitioning the government to have it banned, particularly in the use of childrens wooden playsets. Studies have shown that the levels used in decks and playsets are high enough to pose an increased risk of cancer.
The dangers are INSANE and I cant believe this is even allowed, I wouldve never thought!
http://www.cpsc.gov/phth/ccafact.html
how toxic it actually can be: http://www.origen.net/arsenic.html
Please read the material and make your own determinations. I didnt post this to be an alarmist....I PERSONALLY find it disturbing, but this does not mean you have to as well. Its just posted so you can educate yourselves if you wish too.

Yep, I've always known that...It's terrible, and why it is super important to wash kids hands after playing on them ...I'm actually considering a PVC swingwet but they are !

ITA. I have always known too about the pressure treated wood. Hate to ban my DD from having a swingset but I hate the thought of them.

Is this currently all wood playsets (the ones sold at BJ's, Wood Kingdom, Creative Playthings, etc)?
I payed over $2k for a playset that has arsenic in it...awesome
ETA: I am thinking the levels are so small though. Of course it seems scary but I feel like there are chemicals in everything these days...it's probably more dangerous to eat fruit that is sprayed with pesticides.

from what I understand, they arent that low though. They advise that children not sit for long periods of time on them, that they wash hands immediately after use, that any splinters be treated immediately.

We bought our set from Creative Playthings and they told us they use Naturaline wood which is 100% chemical free because I asked about it. I just checked their website and it said the same. I am guessing 100% chemical free would mean free of arsinic too.
ETA: This is off the Creative Playthings website. We have the Special Pine i think and it says it is not treated with arsenic.
Q. Is the wood in your play sets pressure treated? A. All of the wood used to manufacture our Naturaline™ Swing Sets is not chemically treated. Our Special Pine™ and Basic Pine Play Sets are made of # 1 Grade Southern Yellow Pine and treated with ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary). ACQ contains no arsenic or chromium and is completely safe for children.

PVC is no where near the safer choice. Google PVC harmful and you will get a ton of info.
