If you commute to lower manhattan
do you take the LIRR to Penn or do the Bklyn route?

I'm at the southern most tip..
Someone told me to take the brooklyn train and then take the 4/5 to Bowling Green and walk a few blocks.
I wonder if it's better/quicker.

My father did for many years. He always took the train to Brooklyn.

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
I did for years - down on Exhange Place (near Wall Street). I always took the Brooklyn/Atlantic Avenue route and then the 2/3 train to Wall Street/Williams Street. Less crowded.

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
I've done both. I just take whatever LIRR train comes into my station. It is pretty quick. I also always take the subway and leave from Brooklyn when I am commuting back home at night. So much easier then dealing with Penn during the rush. I only have to go into Lower Manhattan every few months though.

I used to work at the tip (One State Street by the NYHRC) and found Bklyn to be quicker. My mom still does it. I also find it much less chaotic than dealing with Penn too.
ETA: I took 4/5 to Bowling Green too.

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
my dad does this - he works on state street and definitely prefers the brooklyn route. I think it's the 2/3 from the flatbush avenue LIRR?

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
When I lived on LI, I took the train to Brooklyn - it was so much nicer than having to deal with Penn Station - especially if you can get a train where you don't need to change in Jamaica.

the train from atlantic ave to bowling green takes about 10 mins (usually a little less).
you could take the 2/3 to wall as well, and you wouldn't have to walk up/down the stairs at the atlantic, as the LIRR exits to the 2/3 Manhattan platform.
it is DEFINTELY less hectic than taking the train from Penn.

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
oops, changing my answer-
He goes through Brooklyn every morning and takes the 2/3 to Wall St
Shows how much I know
He comes home through Penn bc they moved his Brooklyn train there a couple of years ago

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
When DH was in Chinatown - he went through Brooklyn - much less hectic.
But there was only one good train coming home, so if there wasn't a shot at that - he would go up to Penn

Re: If you commute to lower manhattan
I work down there but am not on LI anymore. My dad is though & works in my neighborhood & still goes through Penn.
I think it is just the timing of the Brooklyn train that doesn't really work for him.
If you get off at Wall street, you still have to walk back downtown to South Ferry, so the 4/5 to Bowling Green would probably be better.

you could catch the R on the Pacific Street side of the Atlantic Ave station, you'd exit to the subway, go down the stairs and walk through to the other side...it's a bit more of an effort but if you want to be close, it's right there.
I guess what you could do is try the 3 subway options (4/5 to to Bowling Green, 2/3 to Wall and R to Whitehall) and see if any make your commute a bit better.
maybe I'll see you on the train

I think I will definitely try to 4/5 to bowling green and the R to whitehall.
Not sure it makes sense to take the 2/3 to Wall.
All I know is that today due to some BS in the tunnel into Penn we were delayed about 30 mins. My total commute door to door today was 2 hrs one way!
