i'm a little torn on this issue...i mostly sway towards "yes" though..
i have nothing against pot, and i know that just because it became "legal" doesn't mean everyone would do it...
and i know it can help those who are suffering in chronic pain, too.

yes, i think it should be legalized. the government spends billions fighting marijuana use. i don't smoke it... (only tried it once or twice when I was 20) but if I wanted to I could call at least 6 people right now that could get me some. So, why are they spending so much fighting it when they aren't even making a dent? It makes so much more sense to legalize it and tax it. Then they aren't spending those billions anymore (so that's money saved) and then they will be making money on taxing it. It just makes a lot more sense to me.
Most people associate marijuana users with being lazy and unproductive... which I don't think is true at all. I know so many successful people (business owners, office managers, nurses, etc.) that smoke a little when they get home at night. I think out of all the marijuana users I know... only 1 of them is an actual "pothead" and he still manages to hold a job. I never knew so many people actually do it. I am surprised every time I find out someone else i know smokes it.
The bottom line is... people that want to use marijuana are going to... regardless of the law. They might as well tax it. JMO

not sure- I can certainly see the advantages of legalizing if it was taxed- but I think a lot of people- myself included- never tried it because it was illegal- and we'd certainly have to put age restrictions on usage

We could grow in order to use/sell for hemp products. It would make us back into producing instead of importing everything. We could have industry of creating products to support economic health of LI.
The plants are not just used for the bud ya know?

We could wipe out the national debt. It would create jobs and help with the economy. Besides the actual bud; the plant iteself can be used in soooo many ways.
I think one of the reasons that it is not legalized is because Hemp could actually take over for Cotton and the Cotton Farmers in America will NEVER go for that.

Absolutely - legalize it, tax it and treat it like alcohol.

I disagree with people that say it shouldn't be legalized because it's a gateway drug
Most people i know who smoke pot are 'normal' people who smoke once in a while to relax - they're not stoners, they all hold down regular jobs and contribute to society just like anyone else. None of the would ever think about doing anything 'harder' - they're just not interested.
I think if you're going to start doing serious drugs.. you're going to start doing it, whether you start with pot, alcohol, coke or heroin.
so yes, legalize it and lets get some revenue from it

I agree with those who said to legalize it and treat it like alcohol. At least the country could make some money off of it. I at least think it needs to be more widely legalized for medical reasons. I also think that the usage amount will stay about the same. its very very easy to get now, so I don't think it will cause more people to do it. If anything it might make it harder for minors to get it, where its easy for them to get it now.

The reason I asked is, DH and I watched a special on MSNBC and this one dude in California owns a weeds store. Well he paid almost a million dollars in taxes alone in one year. Times that by a lot more people and bam debt paid for and a surplus. Plus, the quality would be better too. My cousin when he lived in Cali, had a medical marijuana license to smoke it. He said the quality was INSANE and it was worth the cost.

Some of the most successful and wealthy people I know smoke it several times a week. I think it's naive to think of pot smokers as lazy. It's so mainstream that there is no way you can even begin to stereotype people who smoke it.

i agree.. however i do firmly believe that kids should not do it. There should definitely be an age restriction on when you can legally smoke it (at least 21) so it doesn't interfere with any kids learning
