Get This... Over $750 !!!

Good LORD!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

We took today's beautiful weather as an opportunity to put a bunch of crap out for a garage sale.

When packing, of course, we came up with some stuff - nothing all that great and not a lot of items - but whatever. We went around and put up a few signs, no ADs or anything - just a few signs around the block. It was a one day only sale from just 12-4. I mean, we had some nice pieces of furniture, an old TV from my parents, lots of kids toys, some rugs, paintings, odds and ends, and clothing/shoes. I sold two of my Coach bags I never wear.

But, HOLY COW - over 750 dollars later DH and I cannot freaking believe that we almost just put all that stuff to the curb! We had two bags full left over -- that will go to good will.

This pays for the painter, the movers, and some Rachael Ray kitchen/cooking accessories!!! Chat Icon

I would like to know too, I price items low like a dollar, still do pretty well 400+ but wonder if I am too low for items, would like to see how everyone prices things.

well, we used my label maker... so, for a faux fur vest I had but don't really want to wear anymore mostly b/c i get dirty looks from people who assume it is real -- and also b/c it sheds a lot Chat Icon i put "faux fur vest - like new, worn once, from nordstrom - $25" and some lady was like "i'll give you 20" - so, i was like "sold!"

we grouped things by catagory -- all shoes were $2 a pair b/c the odds of someone being my size (10 or 11) is not that high - every single pair sold!! then, electronics - an old, cleaned out completely computer - $20 - we got $15. then, dvd players, old cell phones ALWAYS go and we had about 20 of them b/c DH used to work at the car wash and would find dead phones allllll the time. they went for 5 bucks a piece.

the biggest thing is to "work" the garage sale - talk to people, they will want to offer you prices and you negotiate with them.

all clothes were $2 a piece - tops and bottoms. unless never worn Chat Icon lol yes i had some things with tags on it -- those got $5 - $10 a piece.

furniture are big ticket items -- mirrors, paintings, rugs, armoirs, chests, etc. we had quite a few between us, MIL, and my mom -- so, anywhere from $25 - $40 bucks for rugs and paintings, $30-$60 for these big, nice mirrors. then, the furn. $100 - $150, etc. i labeled it with negotiable on all of that stuff.

we sold a big china cabinet for $150 -- was priced at $200. i was thrilled. the thing weighed a ton.

umm kids toys - real cheap. some were unopened! so they were $2 - $5. kids books were a buck a piece. then, little odds and ends -- mostly 1 or 2 dollars a piece. it worked out great.

DH's old mountain bike got a cool $40!

biggest piece of advice - start EARLY, set up and price everything -- that makes it so easy otherwise you get "how much for this?" a million times. set up everything in groups and in a semi-circle so you can stand behind the tables or items and people can look and you can haggle with them as they go.

keep the money box INSIDE the garage and go INSIDE to make change -- we had a box hidden in the garage that way no one from the sale even went near it b/c no one would ever GO INSIDE the garage, KWIM?

make sure you have plenty of change to start out with b/c you'll have to make change in the beginning. so, i would say about 40 bucks in small bills - singles, fives, a few tens.

people always come early. we had a start time of 12 and people were there at 9am so plan on having stuff set up b/c it can get stressful trying to tag everything with these people fishing around you to get 'the best stuff' before everyone else - and they never have courtesy to wait LOL! EVER!

well, you can't put the price for what you want to get for the item. b/c avid garage sale shoppers always want less than the stickered price.

so, if you put a dollar i wouldn't be surprised if they came back at fifty cents lol, KWIM?

we ticketed everything just a few dollars over -- that way -- if i wanted 10 bucks for it i would put 12 or 15.

worked out pretty good.

but that's why you have to have people that will "work" the sale.

my parents are notorious for staying in the garage all shy and making me go out and work every single customer LOL!

Re: Get This... Over $750 !!!

Oh and I think what really helped - it was the day before Easter. So, you had a lot of people out driving around with not much to do and, best of all, NO OTHER GARAGE SALES.

We were the only one for miles - so we were told by customers.

I think it all depends on the condition of the bag.

I'm the type of person who is FANATICAL about my bags. They always stay in their dust bags and are kept in their boxes when not in use. I have a cleaner for them, a moisturizer, and they *NEVER* touch the floor lol. So, I have bags that are almost 8 years old and look brand new.

That being said, I was able to part with three bags and one wallet -- two of the three were Spring/Summer bags and were like a canvas type - not leather - I had got them at the outlet. So, they were cheap to begin with. Maybe I spent 70-80 bucks each on them. They sold for 40 dollars for both... so 20 bucks a piece. They were on the smaller side and like I said, not leather - summer bags.

Then, I had a bag with C's on it - one from last spring that was from the store - a good size, it was originally $298 and in great condition - with paperwork and dustbag. That sold for $85 - I asked $100.

The wallet was all C's, pretty small, but a wallet - that went for $12.

I was happy - I never EVER wore those so for me, it was great just to get money for them since I don't even NOTICE their absence.
