Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
We put a bunch of them in but now I'm scared of them because of the mercury in them.
Am I just being silly? What if they break?

Re: Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
I got scared when I took one out the other day. Afraid I was going to break it.
Ever since I read on the box that if it breaks, you need to clear the room for 20 minutes.

Re: Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
I am scared of them big time. Unfortunately we have fluroscent lighting in our basement, those big long bulbs and those scare the heck out of me...now that I have a child (and when I was pg, I stayed clear when DH had to change them, in case).

Re: Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
I'm not worried. I know the precautions, and the risks. There are hazards everywhere around us (CRT TVs emit a lot of radiation, for example). Since DW and I know about the bulbs, we keep DC away (which we would anyway, since I don't want them to get cut with regular bulbs either).
For me, it's a calculated known risk that I can minimize to a point. With every other hazard in the world (just being in a car, eating hot dogs, having a dog in the house, visiting someone's house that might have lead paint, etc), I have to pick my battles. For me, for this one, I'm choosing to be careful, save some money, and put less pollution in the atmosphere.

I knew there was mercury in them, did not know you had to clear the room after a breakage for 10 minutes....FAIL (several times)

Re: Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
the amount of mercury that you are likely exposed to after breaking a CFL is no more than you subject yourself to when eating a bite of tuna.
and that's just a BITE of tuna. most people eat entire sandwiches full of the stuff.
it's also in flu shots. also, if you were to look at the amount of mercury in one of those spiral bulbs, it's the size of a speck that a pen mark would be if you dotted your hand with it. it's miniscule.
i am not saying it's absolutely nothing to worry about, you should be careful, try not to break them, and if you do you should air out the room and then clean it up properly. but don't be scared of it...be more afraid of your tuna fish sandwich.

Re: Anyone else scared of energy saving lightbulbs?
Wow on 2 accounts:
1-I did not see yesterday's post, holy coincidence-sorry for the untitled spinoff.
2-good to know about the "myths".
I'm still scared, irrationally so, I guess but I started changing the bulbs back to the regular ones.
